Abstract: We examine the effect of net capital inflows on industrialization in the ASEAN-4 countries of Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, and Thailand. Using panel data covering 1980–2018, we estimate the influence of both aggregate and disaggregated net capital inflows on the manufacturing sector’s share in employment and real output. We find that aggregate net capital inflows have a negative influence on the manufacturing share of employment. Disaggregating capital inflows reveals that the negative effects emanate from non-FDI inflows, particularly portfolio investment and portfolio debt inflows. Meanwhile, FDI inflows have a positive effect on the manufacturing share of output. Our findings are consistent with existing evidence on the effects of aggregate capital inflows and non-FDI inflows on the manufacturing sector. We make a novel contribution for the ASEAN-4 by tracing the negative effects of non-FDI inflows to portfolio investment and portfolio debt, and uncovering the positive ffect of FDI on manufacturing’s output share. Our findings imply that policymakers in developing countries must pay attention to the influence that capital inflows exert on structural change and their industrialization efforts.

Abstract: Amid various trade agreements that define trade rules and commitments for economies globally, the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) have emerged as the largest and most forward-looking agreements. The combined impact of these agreements is expected to promote deeper integration of member economies, resulting in sustained economic growth. However, these agreements also present threats, such as increased inequality and stiffer competition for local industries. Given these opportunities and threats to member economies, it is crucial to examine the readiness of enterprises for liberalization, especially in less developed economies like the Philippines. This study focuses on the Philippine tourism industry, given its economic significance. It underscores the continuously expanding economic role of tourism, identifies opportunities and threats, and assesses the readiness of tourism enterprises for trade liberalization. To address the research question of how tourism enterprises can prepare for the impacts of trade liberalization brought about by RCEP and CPTPP, a qualitative triangulation approach involving document reviews, key informant interviews, and focus group discussions was employed. The findings indicate that both trade agreements offer limited opportunities for tourism enterprises to participate in liberalization, as they are constrained by issues of mutual recognition and standardization of skills. These findings aim to evaluate the current status of tourism within the context of ongoing developments in the international economic environment.

Abstract: This study investigates Vietnamese citizens’ participation in plastic waste treatment and environment improvement. We developed and adopted a novel method (CVMM) that integrates the contingent valuation, mindsponge, and mindspongeconomics – a new type of economics to estimate and reasonate households’ financial contribution for improved plastic waste treatment in North Vietnam. CVMM analytics were used to explore 1103 observations surveyed during 2022-2023 in the North Vietnam. The empirical findings suggest that public-private partnership should be further expanded and/or strengthen to improve finance while stronger environment policy associated with environmental education should be taken to improve environmental literacy and build environmental culture, which ultimately help address plastic waste and environmental issues in the long run.

Abstract: This study examines income inequality across 53 Asian countries from 1990 to 2021, focusing on the application of the Kuznets’ curve theory. This hypothesis states an inverted U-shaped relationship exists between economic growth and inequality, suggesting an initial increase followed by a decline in income disparity as GDP per capita growth. We analyzed data accruing the share of income of the Top 1% income holders of each country, by regions and for the continent as a whole. We employed a fixed-effects panel model with GDP per capita, squared GDP per capita and cubed GDP per capita as explanatory variables. Our results include mixed evidence of the completion of the curve: Asia overall supports the Kuznets’ curve however the regional analysis reveal differences. While East and South Asia present with significant U-shaped relationship patterns, Central Asia shows an inverted N-shaped relationship. Referencing to West and Southeast Asia, they demonstrate similar U-shaped trends however not statistically significant. This research contributes by offering region-specific insights into inequality dynamics relating to economic growth to provide policymakers with tools to target interventions for inclusive development across Asian countries.

Abstract: The crime of human trafficking during the 2018-2022 period is very worrying and endangers national security, the policies taken by the government are not very significant for cases of human trafficking. The high number of unemployed, limited employment opportunities resulting in an increasing poverty rate is one of the factors that has resulted in high public interest in working abroad even though they work in the non-formal sector without having high knowledge or sufficient competence to work abroad. This condition is exploited by perpetrators of human trafficking crimes by giving lures or promises to get high salaries while working abroad so that they can improve their economic life. Low education causes them to be deceived by perpetrators of human trafficking crimes, the fact is that when they arrive, many are not employed. humane, unpaid work, even made into women commercial sex workers which is not surprising that many illegal migrant workers end up dying. The increasing prevalence and intensity of human trafficking crimes is caused by the still weak resources owned by the government and it is then suspected that there are law enforcement officials involved in supporting human trafficking crimes in Indonesia.

Abstract: Knowledge of the factors driving people's views on redistribution in the Global South remains limited. While these societies occupy top positions in inequality rankings, redistribution levels tend to be lower. We combine survey and experimental data from Mozambique and Viet Nam to test whether redistributive preferences vary depending on the source of inequality, focusing on two channels, fairness views and communication. First, we confirm the finding that inequality resulting from differences in merit is more accepted than inequality due to luck or factors outside of individual control.

Abstract: Climate change has increasingly exerted an adverse effect on natural ecosystems and biodiversity. To be specific, one million of the world’s estimated eight million species of flora and fauna are in danger of extinction. In order to resolve the problem, a novel approach is to build an eco-surplus culture in which a group of people share a set of pro-environmental attitudes, values, beliefs, and behaviors to mitigate anthropogenic environmental impacts. In this sense, this study employs a culture-based approach to examines the antecedents of the utilization and financial contribution of urban dwellers to public and national parks where a variety of plants and animals are conserved. Using the Bayesian Mindsponge Mindspongeconomics to conduct analysis on 535 Vietnamese urban residents, we found that the frequency of visiting national park and of consuming bushmeat, the intention to visit a national park and age positively affect the willingness to contribute financially to transplantation projects in the public park. Meanwhile, having trees in the house and frequently visiting national park leads to a higher probability of people donating to conservation projects in the national park. These findings reinforce the potential of an eco-surplus culture in generating finance for conservation places that are important to curb biodiversity loss, and thus helps policy-makers to devise more suitable policies regarding urban planning and resources allocation nationwide and beyond.

Abstract: Comparing the major Asian economies of China, India and Japan without taking account of variations in size suggests that the Asian Little Divergence began in the eighteenth century when Japan overtook first India and then China. However, the Great Divergence debate has focused on when the leading regions of the declining countries first fell behind and there was significant regional variation in GDP per capita in all three countries. Allowing for regional variation significantly changes the dating of the Asian Little Divergence: (1) In China, the Yangzi Delta, with a population about the same size as the whole of Japan, did not fall behind until around the time of the Meiji restoration in 1868. (2) In Japan, the Kinai region forged ahead of the Yangzi Delta around 1800. (3) In India, Mysore remained behind the Yangzi Delta throughout the period 1600-1870 and therefore has less significance for the timing of the Asian Little Divergence.

Abstract: This paper uses recently revised data on Japanese GDP to analyse the process by which Japan caught-up with the West. The new historical national accounts suggest that Japan was more than one-third richer in 1874 than suggested by Maddison, and that the Meiji period growth built on earlier development. We show that (1) despite trend GDP per capita growth during the Tokugawa shogunate, the catching-up process only started after 1890 with respect to Britain, and after World War 1 with respect to the United States and many European nations (2) although catching up was driven by the dynamic productivity performance of Japanese manufacturing, Japanese success in exporting manufactured goods was just as much driven by limiting the growth of real wages (3) despite claims that Japan was following a distinctive Asian path of labour intensive industrialisation, capital played an important role in the catching-up process.

The study reveals that the pandemic had a heterogeneous impact on firm TFP depending on the firm's operational characteristics, specifically whether the firm is a multinational enterprise (MNE) or a pure exporter (non-MNE). Whilst the pandemic had a more significant negative impact on the TFP of pure exporters than other firms, MNEs were less affected by the pandemic shock than pure exporters. This implies that whilst both firms were exposed to negative demand shocks on a global scale, MNEs were better equipped to handle supply-side uncertainties through international diversification. The study identifies certain characteristics of MNEs that helped buffer the pandemic shock, such as shedding labour, high R&D intensity, and more diversification via foreign subsidiaries. These characteristics enabled MNEs to mitigate the pandemic shock and even increase their TFP during the pandemic.

Abstract: We model the impact of rising temperatures on labor productivity, labor market dynamics, and income inequality. Using a heterogeneous agent continuous-time (HACT) model with directed search, we analyze how temperature-induced productivity fluctuations influence the labor market, income and wealth in-equality, and wealth accumulation. The model features workers differentiated by wealth, productivity, and location, where temperature affects transitions be-tween high and low productivity states. Firms post fixed-wage contracts, and workers direct their job search across segmented labor markets. We calibrate the model using Vietnamese Labor Force data (2009-2018) matched with me-teorological records, capturing regional temperature variations. With increased temperatures, in low wage markets the ratio of vacancies to unemployed workers searching in those market falls, as labor productivity declines and falling wealth leads workers to direct their search to these markets when vacancies are also falling. The wage distribution shifts to the left, and average incomes and wealth fall. Climate-induced productivity shocks amplify income and wealth disparities as wealthier individuals are able to self-insure better against the income risk. The results underscore the role of climate change in shaping labor market inequality and provide insights into policy interventions that may mitigate its adverse effects.
