Abstract: M&A consulting is providing solutions, services, or applications to help the buyer and seller completing the M&A deal, thereby earning fees. The global M&A consulting market is extremely large with hundreds of years of experience. In Vietnam, due to the characteristics of a young economy in the process of integration, M&A consulting services are scattered among auditing firms, securities companies, law firms and other specialized M&A consulting firm. Although Vietnam's M&A market has a history of development for more than 20 years, M&A consulting services are still mainly provided by foreign companies. This paper is the first study provides an overview of M&A advisory activities, both financial and legal, in Vietnam and describe perspective of the M&A consulting market in Vietnam as well as suggests some solutions to develop this service in domestic companies.

Abstract: Nanotechnology research within food and agriculture systems in Indonesia has been increasing. However, these nanotechnology studies remain narrowly focused on source exploration, isolation, characterization, and potential use and not enough on sustainability and safety aspects. Indonesia's small- and medium-scale enterprises have also commercialized nanoproducts for fertilizer, herbal medicine, and food supplements in limited volumes. These enterprises are affiliated with the Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology Indonesia (BPPT)/National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) and/or universities through research-business incubation programs with government support. While the Government of Indonesia's masterplans and standards have mainstreamed nanotechnology, the key deliverables are primarily publications, patents, and intellectual property rights, giving little direction toward applying nanotechnology for commercial purposes (i.e., industrial products). Policies and legislation are yet to be enacted to regulate nanotechnology, although nanoproducts are already being commercialized. The challenges to applying nanotechnology in Indonesia's agrifood systems include high cost, difficulties in fabrication and characterization, low investment in research and development, lack of advanced technologies, and limited information on nanoproduct toxicology, safety, and risks. In addition, the safety (toxicity and risks) and sustainability of nanotechnology need further systematic study and guidance.

Abstract: The growing middle classes in middle-income countries may play a key role in current trends of democratic backsliding, online activism and lifestyle politics. This contribution uncovers which modes of political participation are prevalent among the middle classes in Peru and the Philippines, including new forms of online participation and lifestyle politics for sustainability. Drawing on household surveys conducted in 2018, we use latent class analysis and logit regressions to analyse, first, the characteristics of online vs offline participation, and second, the role of political consumption and online activism for political participation dynamics. The latter analysis contributes to the gateway/getaway debate of lifestyle politics. In both countries, we find four comparable classes: a substantial disengaged class that is not engaging in any political participation, an all-round activist class, an online activist class and a class that mostly engages in civil society activities. Further classes with specific participation patterns and socio-demographic characteristics could be identified for each country. Although the online activists in both countries are unlikely to engage in any other form of political participation, a clear empirical case for lifestyle politics as a separate mode of participation only exists among young Peruvians with a steady job. In the Philippines, political consumption as a form of lifestyle politics blends in with other types of political participation.

Abstract: The purpose of this report is to identify and investigate the significance of the Training and Development of Indonesian enterprises during a period of economic crisis. The specific period of economic crisis to be examined is the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. This paper aims to see the shifts or changes in activities associated with the Training and Development of Indonesian employees. To begin with, the COVID-19 outbreak has forced businesses globally to follow strict safety measures to avoid the spread of the coronavirus. These safety measures include adhering to physical and social distancing measures. As a result, many enterprises were forced to switch from a physical to a virtual environment such as working from home (WFH). As the majority of business activities were switched to online, this research investigates the extent of changes that take place with regards to Training and Development activities in Indonesia. It is known that Training and Development activities within an organization are extremely practical and hands-on approach activities. However, due to the recent COVID-19 pandemic, these activities too, must switch drastically to cope with the current safety measures. The approach that this research follows is qualitative. A Google Form survey distributed to 100 individuals, aims to investigate the experience of these respondents regarding the new ways of working conducted during the virus outbreak. Findings of this research have shown that the drastic switch to a more virtual and digital approach to Training and Development could be extremely promising. As the world has become increasingly reliant on technology, the increasing usage of digital tools is considered to be a benefit rather than a burden in the long-term. However, due to the rapid changes and adjustments made, many improvements are still necessary to ensure effective and optimal use of digital tools. The recommendations of the ways to improve these virtual activities of reskilling programs are divided into five categories: Institutional, Financial, Technical, Material and Psychological Support measures.

Abstract: The rising demand for electric vehicles (EVs) worldwide necessitates the development of robust and accessible charging infrastructure, particularly in developing countries where electricity disruptions pose a significant challenge. Earlier charging infrastructure optimization studies do not rigorously address such service disruption characteristics, resulting in suboptimal infrastructure designs. To address this issue, we propose an efficient simulation-based optimization model that estimates candidate stations' service reliability and incorporates it into the objective function and constraints. We employ the control variates (CV) variance reduction technique to enhance simulation efficiency. Our model provides a highly robust solution that buffers against uncertain electricity disruptions, even when candidate station service reliability is subject to underestimation or overestimation. Using a dataset from Surabaya, Indonesia, our numerical experiment demonstrates that the proposed model achieves a 13% higher average objective value compared to the non-robust solution. Furthermore, the CV technique successfully reduces the simulation sample size up to 10 times compared to Monte Carlo, allowing the model to solve efficiently using a standard MIP solver. Our study provides a robust and efficient solution for designing EV charging infrastructure that can thrive even in developing countries with uncertain electricity disruptions.

Abstract: Sustainable investing is growing fast and investors are increasingly integrating environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria. However, ESG ratings are derived using heterogeneous methodologies and can be quite divergent across providers, which suggests the need for a formal statistical procedure to evaluate their accuracy. This paper develops a backtesting procedure that evaluates how well these extra-financial metrics help in predicting a company's idiosyncratic risk. Technically, the inference is based on extending the conditional predictive ability test of Giacomini and White (2006) to a panel data setting. We apply our methodology to the forecasting of stock returns idiosyncratic volatility and compare two ESG rating systems from Sustainalytics and Asset4 across three investment universes (Europe, North America, and the Asia-Pacific region). The results show that the null hypothesis of no informational content in ESG ratings is strongly rejected in Europe, whereas results appear mixed in the other regions. Furthermore, the predictive accuracy gains are higher when considering the environmental dimension of ESG ratings. Importantly, applying the test only to firms over which there is a high degree of consensus between the ESG rating agencies leads to higher predictive accuracy gains for all three universes. Beyond providing insights into the accuracy of each of the ESG rating systems, this last result suggests that information gathered from several ESG rating providers should be cross-checked before ESG is integrated into investment processes.

Abstract: This paper considers a linear panel model with interactive fixed effects and unobserved individual and time heterogeneities that are captured by some latent group structures and an unknown structural break, respectively. To enhance realism the model may have different numbers of groups and/or different group memberships before and after the break. With the preliminary nuclear norm-regularized estimation followed by row- and column-wise linear regressions, we estimate the break point based on the idea of binary segmentation and the latent group structures together with the number of groups before and after the break by sequential testing K-means algorithm simultaneously. It is shown that the break point, the number of groups and the group memberships can each be estimated correctly with probability approaching one. Asymptotic distributions of the estimators of the slope coefficients are established. Monte Carlo simulations demonstrate excellent finite sample performance for the proposed estimation algorithm. An empirical application to real house price data across 377 Metropolitan Statistical Areas in the US from 1975 to 2014 suggests the presence both of structural breaks and of changes in group membership.

Abstract: Emotions are fundamental elements driving humans’ decision-making and information processing. Fear is one of the most common emotions influencing investors’ behaviors in the stock market. Although many studies have been conducted to explore the impacts of fear on investors’ investment performance and trading behaviors, little is known about factors contributing to and alleviating investors’ fear during the market crash (or extremely volatile periods) and their fear regulation after the crisis. Thus, the current data descriptor provides details of a dataset of 1526 Chinese and Vietnamese investors, a potential resource for researchers to fill in the gap. The dataset was designed and structured based on the information-processing perspective of the Mindsponge Theory and existing evidence in life sciences. The Bayesian Mindsponge Framework (BMF) analytics validated the data. Insights generated from the dataset are expected to help researchers expand the existing literature on behavioral finance and the psychology of fear, improve the investment effectiveness among investors, and inform policymakers on strategies to mitigate the negative impacts of market crashes on the stock market.

Abstract: The Covid-19 pandemic has significantly impacted the way people think of work and the economic relationship between vacancies and unemployment. This paper analyses the Beveridge curve changes of Singapore since the pandemic’s onset. We find evidence of an outward shift in the curve and a steepening of the curve’s slope. The shift is mainly driven by lower matching efficiency and higher activity, and partially due to higher labour reallocation.

Abstract: Monetary policy transmission in EMs has been found to be weak historically due to under-developed financial markets and heavy central bank intervention in FX markets that undermine the exchange rate channel. Against this background, this paper investigates the transmission of monetary policy, including the role of external factors, in Malaysia and highlight findings that could be relevant for other EMs. We find an important role for the credit and the exchange rate channels. Further, we also find a complementary role for policy tools including Foreign Exchange Intervention (FXI) and liquidity tools such as Statutory Reserve Requirement in shaping the transmission of monetary policy. We then explore the spillover effects of external global factors including global monetary policy and global commodity prices on monetary policy transmission in a small open economy such as Malaysia. The results show that while global commodity prices do not impair monetary policy transmission, global monetary policy tightening could complement domestic efforts to achieve price stability by inducing a global disinflation. Finally, monetary policy transmission is delayed and weakened in high inflationary environment, with the implication that more aggressive and preemptive policy actions may be needed in such cases.

Here, we investigate how state by year variation in alcohol control arising from the repeal of federal prohibition affects mortality for cohorts born in the 1930s. We find that individuals born in wet states experienced higher later-life mortality than individuals born in dry states, translating into a 3.3% increase in mortality rates between 1990 and 2004 for affected cohorts.
