Abstract: To assess ways to achieve widespread health insurance coverage with financial solvency in developing countries, we designed a randomized experiment involving almost 6,000 households in Indonesia who are subject to a nationally mandated government health insurance program. We assessed several interventions that simple theory and prior evidence suggest could increase coverage and reduce adverse selection: substantial temporary price subsidies (which had to be activated within a limited time window and lasted for only a year), assisted registration, and information. Both temporary subsidies and assisted registration increased initial enrollment. Temporary subsidies attracted lowercost enrollees, in part by eliminating the practice observed in the no subsidy group of strategically timing coverage for a few months during health emergencies. As a result, while subsidies were in effect, they increased coverage more than eightfold, at no higher unit cost; even after the subsidies ended, coverage remained twice as high, again at no higher unit cost. However, the most intensive (and effective) intervention – assisted registration and a full one-year subsidy – resulted in only a 30 percent initial enrollment rate, underscoring the challenges to achieving widespread coverage.

Abstract: The aim of this research is to examine the effect of emotional intelligence on turnover intention, noting the mediating roles of work-family conflict and job burnout. Survey data collected from 198 employees at commercial banks in Vietnam was analyzed to provide evidence. Results from the partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) using SmartPLS 3.0 program indicated that there was a negative impact of emotional intelligence on employees’ turnover intention; this was mediated partially through work-family conflict and job burnout. The main findings of this research provided some empirical implications for commercial banks. It implied that organizations in the service industry should give a try to improve their people’s work-family balance, reduce job burnout and take advantages of these emotional balance to create beneficial outcomes.

This Research and Policy Brief argues that this method needs to be supplemented with an approach that makes officials more directly accountable to citizens.

Abstract: Technological developments are likely to bring many new opportunities, which may be even larger in emerging economies and may allow them to “leapfrog” certain stages of development. Notwithstanding these opportunities, emerging economies face significant challenges associated with rapid technological progress. Many of these challenges are the same as in advanced economies, but differences in starting conditions may result in a greater threat for the emerging world. This study explores the benefits and risks brought by this new technological wave from the perspective of thirteen key emerging economies: Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Chile, China, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and Turkey. In particular, it examines: the risk of automation; whether labour markets are polarising; and the potential benefits (but also challenges) of the platform economy.

Abstract: Our study provides evidence that land fragmentation has negative consequences for household income, possibly because of its negative effects on crop income in ruralVietnam. Notably, using the Instrumental Variables (IV) method, we find that the negative effect is much greater after addressing the endogeneity of land fragmentation. IV analysis, therefore, suggests that a conventional approach which often uses the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) method is likely to underestimate the impact of land fragmentation on rural households. Also, the finding implies that reducing land fragmentation would minimize its negative consequences for household income by reducing its negative effect on crop income.

Abstract: We examine the Treasury bond auction system in the Philippines by using bid data from around 500 Treasury auctions from January 2010 to October 2017. The Philippines features a strategic auctioneer who uses both discriminatory and uniform price auctions, and adopts an active quantity management policy through frequent use of supply restrictions and full rejections. In this environment, the discriminatory auction generates superior outcomes in terms of lower borrowing costs, but at the expense of concentrating awards among fewer bidders. We also nd that he govern- ment's decision to restrict auction supply is driven by cost and strength of demand. In response to higher volatility, and a higher number of competitors, bidders adjust for winner's curse by submitting bids with higher yield spreads. Though we conrm that bidder heterogeneity exists, average auction prots do not signicantly dier across bidder types.Length: 39 pages

Abstract: This empirical investigation aims at exploring the determinants of money demand in Vietnam by using both linear and nonlinear autoregressive distributed lags models over the period spanning from the third quarter of 2000 to the first quarter of 2018. Our findings can be summarized as follows: firstly, when the shock is symmetric (i.e. a permanent nominal appreciation of one percent), the money demand increases by 3.7 percent in the long term. Secondly, when the shock is asymmetric, for a permanent nominal appreciation of one percent, we observe an increase of 15.6 percent in the money demand. Whereas, for a permanent nominal depreciation of one percent, we observe a decrease of 7.4 percent in the money demand. These results are consistent with symmetry tests and lead us to think that asymmetries occur mainly in the short run and are transmitted to the long run.

Abstract: This study is the first to study the lasting effects of innovation on firm profitability in Vietnam. Using a unique panel dataset for the period 2005-2015, our results show that innovators achieve higher profit in comparison with non-innovating firms. The positive effects of innovation on firm profitability are observed not only in the short term but also in the longer term. The benefits of innovation for firm profitability can be seen in higher export probability, better productivity, better access to formal credit, and the ability to secure government support, but only after innovation.

Abstract: Colleting the data through a survey in the Northern region of Malaysia; Kedah, Perlis, Penang and Perak, this study investigates intergenerational social mobility in Malaysia. We measure and analyzed the factors that influence social-economic mobility by using binary choice model (logit model). Social mobility can be measured in several ways, by income, education, occupation or social class. More often, economic research has focused on some measure of income. Social mobility variable is measured using the difference between educational achievement between a father and son. If there is a change of at least of two educational levels between a father and son, then this study will assign the value one which means that social mobility has occurred.

Abstract: During the last two decades, economies in East Asia and Pacific have been integrating internationally through trade and financial investments. One trend is puzzling. Whereas most of the trade integration has been within the region, most of the financial integration has been with countries outside the region. However, a closer examination of investment types shows that therelative lack of regional financial connectivity occurs mostly in equity, bonds, and bank syndicated loans (in so-called arm?s length investments). The region is much more connected through foreign direct investment (FDI) (through both mergers and acquisitions and greenfield investments).

Abstract: Malaysia is experiencing ever increasing domestic energy consumption. This study is an attempt at analyzing the changes in sectoral energy intensities in Malaysia for the period 1995 to 2011. The study quantifies the sectoral total, direct, and indirect energy intensities to track the sectors that are responsible for the increasing energy consumption. The energy input-output model which is a frontier method for examining resource embodiments in goods and services on a sectoral scale that is popular among scholars has been applied in this study.

Abstract: This publication, accompanying the 2019’s update of EQCHANGE, aims at providing an overview of exchange rate misalignments for 2018. In a nutshell, 2018 has been characterized by relatively minor movements in exchange rate misalignments except few EMEs that registered important downward movements owing from the exchange rate depreciations. This is especially the case of Turkey, and to a lesser extent, Brazil, India, Indonesia and Russia. In contrast, most of the major currencies registered a slight appreciation vis-à-vis the US dollar that generally translated in upward movements in currency misalignments. The euro area is again featured two opposite situations with Finland Germany, Ireland and the Netherlands displaying noticeable undervaluations.

Abstract: In this paper, we simulate the effects of an increase in the levels of public spending in health care and social assistance in the Chinese economy, and examine its global effects, i.e., the effects on the main macroeconomic variables of seven regions of the world economy, namely, China, Japan, United States, European Union, Latin America, Asia‐Pacific and Rest of the World. Three different rules to finance the increase in public expenditure are considered. The empirical methodology makes use of a computable general equilibrium model, through an extension of the Global Trade Analysis Project model. The policy measure simulated led to either expansionary or contractionary effects on China’s activity levels, depending on whether the government deficit is left to increase, or if taxes are raised instead in order to offset it. While no sector seemed to be particularly hurt by this measure, trade flows were negatively affected, but this did not seem to have a strong influence on the rest of the world.

Abstract: In this paper, joint oil stockpiling (JOS) refers to a commercial arrangement whereby crude oil, owned and commercially traded by an exporting country, is stored in an importing country in exchange for priority drawdown by the host country in the event of an emergency. It can thus be classified as both commercial and strategic storage (Doshi and Six 2017).

Abstract: The paper aims to recover the critical role of banks in defining the relationship between Financial Development and growth. We hypothesize that Banks can positively motivate templatized GDP growth. A System GMM estimation of GDP growth in a sample of high growth emerging markets from Asia investigates if bank stocks contain information beyond the monetary and banking aggregates.

Abstract: We consider the problem of controlling the diffusion coefficient of a diffusion with constant negative drift rate such that the probability of hitting a given lower barrier up to some finite time horizon is minimized. We assume that the diffusion rate can be chosen in a progressively measurable way with values in the interval [0, 1]. We prove that the value function is regular, concave in the space variable, and that it solves the associated HJB equation. To do so, we show that the heat equation on a right triangle, with a boundary condition that is discontinuous in the corner, possesses a smooth solution.

Abstract: We measure the economic risk of epidemics at a geo-spatially detailed resolution. In addition to data about the epidemic hazard prediction, we use data from 2014-2019 to compute measures for exposure, vulnerability, and resilience of the local economy to the shock of an epidemic. Using a battery of proxies for these four concepts, we calculate the hazard (the zoonotic source of a possible epidemic), the principal components of exposure and vulnerability to it, and of the economy’s resilience (its ability of the recover rapidly from the shock). We find that the economic risk of epidemics is particularly high in most Africa, the Indian subcontinent, China, and Southeast Asia. These results are consistent when comparing an ad-hoc (equal) weighting algorithm for the four components of the index, with one based on an estimation algorithm using Disability-Adjusted Life Years associated with communicable diseases.

Abstract: This study proposes a model of learning by supplying in an international outsourcing framework, where the supplier of a relationship-specific input can reverse engineer and become a competitor to its partner in the final goods market. Transmitting knowledge to a more capable supplier therefore creates competitive threat despite the benefits it brings within an outsourcing relationship. In particular, in markets with less differentiated products and for standard inputs that require less knowledge to be shared, choosing an intermediate capability level supplier prompts a strategic expansion of output to deter supplier entry in the final goods market, resulting in higher profits and welfare. A highly capable supplier is instead accommodated as a rival and is a source of royalty income when the relationship specific input embeds more knowledge about the final product and when the competing varieties are differentiated.

Abstract: This paper examines the role of reference dependence in the elicitation of time preference. The dynamic feature of intertemporal choices offers multiple channels through which the reference effect can occur. Naturally, in evaluating future consumption, one’s current consumption serves as a reference point, and this type of reference point is endogenously determined. Yet potentially exogenous factors are present in the choice environment that also influence the decision maker’s revealed preferences. We performed an experiment that allowed us to examine both the endogenous and exogenous reference effects on the revealed tine preferences. Our design also enabled us to separately estimate the discount factor jointly with the utility curvature. The observed behavioral patterns show that the estimated discount factors were biased by reference endogenous and exogenous points. We also propose a mixture model to account for the reference-dependent effects. We demonstrate that after removing the reference effects and also accounting for the preferences toward money via the utility curvature, the elicited discount factor becomes more patient. We further discuss the implications of the reference-dependent effect on recent observations of elicited intertemporal preferences, including underestimation of the discount factor and the issue of subadditivity.
