Abstract: This document contributes to the scarce empirical literature on the role of services as a source of manufacturing competitiveness in developing economies, providing evidence on the Latin American region. We use the 2018 release of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)’s Trade in Value Added (TiVA) database to assess the servicification of manufacturing exports in seven Latin American countries (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico and Peru) between 2005 and 2015, in comparison with ten Asian emerging economies (eight ASEAN countries (Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam), China and India).

Abstract: One of the less well-understood channels through which technology affects labor market outcomes is the creation of new types of work. In this paper, we investigate the emergence of new occupations by comparing various classifications of occupations and predicting probabilities to access them given workers’ characteristics. Systematic comparisons of successive lists of National Classification of Occupations in India, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Viet Nam find that most new job titles are primarily information and communication technology- and data-related positions within professional and associate professional occupational divisions. When utilizing microdata of India and Viet Nam, we find that emerging occupations, defined as occupation groups with new job titles, pay higher wages than nonemerging occupations. Further, when using logit models to predict chances of accessing emerging occupations given workers’ characteristics, the probability of success is greater for workers who are male, tertiary educated, urbanized, and employed in the service sectors. Adjusted predictions by education and sector show that access to emerging occupations is highest among tertiary-educated workers in services, and that chances of success vary greatly across different age groups.

Abstract: Cambodia is currently ranked sixth in the world in GDP growth. The growth has been assisted by three factors: economic aid received from other countries, contributions from non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and internal reform. Despite these advances, Cambodia continues to be hampered by the long-lasting damage caused by twentieth-century events: the bombing by the United States during the Vietnam War, the genocide under the Khmer Rouge, and the take-over of the country by the Vietnamese. Cambodia in the 1990s was suffering not only significant loss of basic infrastructure, but also a shortage of human talent due to the systematic destruction of its intellectual class. This paper focuses on deficiencies in one aspect of infrastructure: the lack of systems to deliver clean, sanitary water to the country's urban and rural areas. Clean water is necessary for the health of the citizens as well as industrial development. Water-borne disease adversely affects the well-being and productivity of workers; clean water is also essential for most industrial processes. The problem is especially acute in rural areas, where water is necessary for agriculture. Developing clean water systems requires expertise as well as money to locate, filter, and transport water. This paper will propose concrete steps Cambodia should take to improve its sanitary water infrastructure.

Abstract: This paper investigates employment responses to trade liberalisation in a developing economy, Myanmar. Using data from the 2014 Census and the 2017, labour force survey and previous surveys contained in Myanmar Statistical Yearbook, 2017, we find that trade liberalization did not affect the relative size of industry sectors in terms of employment. The OLS results finds support for the theoretical predictions of differential responses to trade reforms between sectors. Conversely, while empirical support is found for tariff reduction in influencing sector level employment, the tariff predictors are weaker overall than the sector productivity and competitiveness (in export market) predictors—implying that trade policy reforms need to be correctly tailored to raising productivity of labour force and sector competitiveness if their impact on employment is to be effectively realised.

Abstract: Mobile phones with banking technology are becoming more readily available in Vietnam. Similarly, many financial institutions and mobile phone service providers are teaming up to provide several banking services to customers via the mobile phone. However, the number of people who choose to adopt or use such technologies is still relatively low. Therefore, there is a need to assess the acceptance of such technologies to establish factors that hinder or promote customer’s intention to use mobile banking. Survey data collected from 452 consumers was analyzed to provide evidence. Results from the partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) using the SmartPLS 3.0 program indicated that perceived easy to use, perceived credibility, usefulness, attitude, perceived behavioral control and subjective norm are significant with respect to the customer’s intention to use mobile banking services. The results of the data analysis contribute to the body of knowledge by demonstrating that the above factors are critical in intention to use mobile banking in a developing country context. The finding of this study can also help marketers in the banking sector offer more suitable marketing strategies in their field in order to make higher attractiveness with mobile banking services.

Abstract: Financial Inclusion is a national development strategy to encourage economic growth through equal distribution of income, poverty alleviation and financial system stability. This community-centered strategy needs to target groups experiencing barriers to accessing financial services. The inclusive financial strategy explicitly targets the groups with the greatest or unfulfilled needs for financial services namely the three categories of people (the poor, low-income, working poor / poor and the near-poor) and three cross-categories (migrant workers, women and underdeveloped regions). By 2019 Indonesia's target on the inclusive public financial index reaches 75%. Inclusive financial ratios have reached 63% of Indonesia's total population by the end of 2017. The government has established five pillars supporting SNKI to achieve the target. First, Financial Education. Second, the concrete Community Property Right has already been in the form of a land certification program. Third, Facilitating Intermediation and Financial Distribution Channels. Fourth, Consumer Protection. Fifth, Financial Services In Government Sector. To achieve an inclusive financial target of 75% by 2019, an additional 51,822,431 adult inclusive residents are required. From the survey results of the Faculty of Economics, University of Indonesia in 5 provinces, 35% of respondents do not have an account at the bank. As many as 32% of Indonesia's adult population has not saving on the basis of the World Bank Survey of Indonesia by the World Bank in 2012. Based on the same survey, 48% of Indonesian adult population save in formal financial institutions. According to World Bank (2011), Indonesian adult residents have accounts at formal financial institutions. The strategy of government, BI, and OJK, nowadays is by optimizing technology services to expand financial products and services to various community groups. An inclusive financial enhancement strategy will also involve civil service and civil registration agencies in various regions to update the data on people who do not have financial products and services. The access program for the financial sector is not only from savings, but also from credit, such as small business credit (KUR) or other small credit, especially digital technology or digitalization must be extended to 4G cellular technology. So for areas that can not signal, its range will be wider. If 4G can reach 50%, then this will help Indonesia's strategy to improve inclusive finance. The purpose of this study is to recommend a model of increasing public financial inclusion through digitizing financial inclusion. The research method is qualitative descriptive, through in depth interview with informant and systematic literature review. Based on the results of research, it is found that in the era of digital economy, the use of technology is one of the strategies that can be applied. Big Data Utilization in Private and Commercial Sector covers Finance field that is investment support, portfolio management, price forecasting, credit. In the field of Banking and Insurance namely credit and policy approval, money laundry detection. While in the field of Finance, Banking and Insurance Security is useful for fraud detection, access control, intrusion detection, virus detection. With digitalization, it is expected that more people can afford affordable financial services. More and more people who can access financial services will improve their lives and reduce poverty.

Abstract: The relationship between Vietnam and China could be captured in the Chinese expression of “同床异梦”, which means lying on the same bed but having different dreams. The two countries share certain cultural and political similarities but also diverge vastly in their national interests. This paper adds to the extant literature on this topic by analyzing the element of trust/mistrust in their interactions in trade-investment, tourism, and defense-security. The analysis shows how the relationship is increasingly interdependent but is equally fragile due to the lack of trust on both sides. The mistrust or even distrust of Chinese subjects run deep within the Vietnamese mindset, from the skepticism of Chinese investment, Chinese tourists, discrimination against ethnic Chinese, to the caution against Chinese aggression in the South China Sea. The paper forecasts that, despite the deep-seated differences and occasional mistrust, going forward, neither side would risk damaging the status quo even when tensions peak.

Abstract: This paper examines the effectiveness of capital account policy in terms of its ability to affect the volume and composition of capital flows, relieve pressures on real exchange rates, and foster monetary policy independence. Ten emerging Asian economies are used as case studies to assess the effectiveness of capital account policy during 2000–2015. The results suggest that some types of capital controls are effective in reducing the volume of capital flows and pressure on real exchange rates. The choice of exchange rate regime matters in terms of the effectiveness of capital controls for fostering monetary policy independence. Although some types of capital controls are effective in creating macroeconomic stability, implementing capital account policy needs to be undertaken with caution. This is because substitution or complementarity among capital controls is evident, both within and across countries in the region. It seems that strong economic fundamentals are more important than capital account policy for changing the composition of capital inflows toward more stable and long-term flows.

Abstract: It is widely believed that financial inclusion aids inclusive growth and reducing inequality. This study constructs financial inclusion indicator and analyzes the link of financial inclusion and income inequality for 33 provinces in Indonesia. In extension to analyses at national level, estimation has been done by dividing provinces into three categories which are agriculture, manufacture, and mining economies. By using Fixed Effect Panel Model, we find financial inclusion appears to have insignificant effect to inequality at national level. While at sub-national level, adding other variables such as GRDP, years of schooling, and trade openness, we find financial inclusion appears to have negative and significant impact on income inequality in manufacture and mining-based provinces, not in agriculture-based. The results suggest that financial inclusion helps to lower income inequality when economic condition encourage people to utilize financial access for productive purposes. More effective financial inclusion programs in rural area are highly demanded.

Abstract: The association between schooling and religious beliefs has been widely documented in the social science literature. Evidence of a causal relationship is, however, limited, particularly in developing countries where religion still plays a significant role in politics and legislation. To bridge this gap in the literature, the present study uses the across cohort variations in the exposure to 1978 education reform in Indonesia to examine the impact of completed years of education on individual religiosity in later life. The results suggest that attaining another year of schooling reduces self-reported religiousness by four percentage points. Consistent with this finding, it also changes solitary religious acts by reducing the number of times individuals pray and the likelihood that they eat only halal food. Educational attainment, however, has little effect on participation in social religious activities or attitude toward other faiths, although it does reduce the religious influence on voting behavior. These results suggest that a program promoting educational attainment in Islamic countries may have an important impact on individual’s religiosity and country’s political economy in the long run., Highlight:・Evidence of a causal relationship between individual education and religiosity is limited in developing countries ・We use the 1978 education reform in Indonesia to examine the impact of completed years of education on religiosity in later life ・An additional year of schooling reduces self-reported religiousness and solitary religious acts ・It also reduces the influence of religious factors on voting when they elect the local leaders and the president ・Reform, which promotes the access to education, may have an externality on the political economy in Islamic countries.

Abstract: The issue of gender inequality in Indonesia is the result of a patriarchal culture that has existed for a long time. The gender division of men and women in the field of social and economic development is clearly visible, as women do not fully gain access to some resource sectors, such as education and employment. Bali as one of the provinces in Indonesia that still adheres to patriarchal culture. But the culture is in fact contrary to the Hindu belief that they believe to be the majority religion, where women have a very respectable position because it is considered as the incarnation of one of the revered Goddesses. This then underlies the movement of one of the TSO (Third Sector Organization) in Bali, Bali Sruti, which then consistently campaigns for women empowerment. In this paper the authors found that the role of Bali Sruti in their efforts to empower women in Bali includes several things, such as the socialization of women's participation in politics, the socialization of pluralism, and interactive discussions through interactive radio in relation to gender equality issues aimed at increasing the participation of Balinese women in sustainable social and economic development.

Abstract: The advancement of technology and Smartphone applications offers a lot of opportunities and challenges for companies to increase their market share. Through this technology and its application, companies such as transportation industries can make a lot of money and bring their products and services closer, faster and more easily to customers. In addition the customers can gain access to companies’ services and products on time. On the other hand the advancement of Smartphone technology disrupts the common transportation business practices. Communication and negotiation are becoming more virtual. This technology brings about huge benefits to both customers and companies. However the same technology causes a huge problem especially to other transportation companies as they might lose market if they do not use it. This technology helps many transportation industries to make business innovations such as offering lower prices, faster services and deliveries. This research focuses on transportation companies, specifically motorcycle taxis with online booking, which use a Smartphone application. In Manado Indonesia there are three popular motorcycle taxi online companies that use a Smartphone online application, which are Gojek, Grab and Uber. A lot of people use an online motorcycle taxi rather than public transportation because of its convenience, affordable price, safety and speed compared to local public transport. This study aims to find out the determinant factors that influence people to use motorcycle taxi online services. This research is going to reveal the favorite motorcycle taxi online company and its criteria based on respondents’ perspectives. This paper will use the Analytical Hierarchy Process both for data gathering and data analysis. The research findings will contribute to the local government in formulating laws and policies specifically on motorcycle taxi online service.

Abstract: This study examines the extent of information about hedging activities disclosures within the annual reports of Main Market companies listed on Bursa Malaysia. The extent of hedging activities disclosures is captured through a 32-item-template, which consists of a mandatory and voluntary disclosure scores. The results of this study indicate that the extent of information on hedging activities disclosure is still insufficient among the sampled companies even though the disclosure scored is quite high. This study also examines the relationship between the existence of risk management committee (RMC), its characteristics and the extent of information on hedging activities disclosure in two separate statistical models. The regression results imply that the existence of RMC is positive but does not significantly influence the extent of information on hedging activities disclosure. However its characteristics (i.e. RMC independence and RMC meeting) have a significant influence. The findings may provide some meaningful insights to regulators, policymakers and researchers, towards the establishment of RMC as a part of the internal corporate governance mechanisms. In addition to its existence, the effectiveness of RMC also needs to be emphasised.

Abstract: We examine the link between extreme weather events and national aid and transfers at the municipal level in the Philippines between 1992 and 2015. Using local-level data of public income and expenditures, local precipitation, poverty incidence, and satellite-based night light luminosity, we find that the national government seems to exhibit strategic behavior by allocating more national aid and transfers during dry spells, in which damage is significantly higher and more prolonged compared to periods of higher-than-usual precipitation. Notwithstanding, the amount of national aid and transfers in these events were very small at about $2 per capita per affected municipality, suggesting that the lack of effectiveness of aid and transfers could be the result of a lack of capacity rather than poor government allocation of public funds.

Abstract: Digital humanities (DH) is a burgeoning field of research in Sinology and Asian studies more broadly, and its diversity and maturity necessitate a cyberinfrastructure fit for DH-focused Sinologists’ specific needs. “Asia Network” is our solution. It is a pioneering approach for resource dissemination and emerging data analytics (such as text mining and other fair-use, consumptive research techniques) in the humanities. It is a language-agnostic software that facilitates the secure linkage between third-party research tools to different third-party textual collections (both licensed and open-access ones) via application programming interfaces (APIs). It revolutionizes how scholars can work with textual sources by promoting a flexible, networked approach to e-infrastructure development. Crucially, Asia Network is a loosely-coupled software with flexible topologies; it can enable both federated or centralized linkages, and it can even “disappear” as long as its API standards remain in place to facilitate communications among databases and tools in the back-end. Thus, unlike large-scale infrastructural projects, Asia Network actively lowers the profile of centralized infrastructure and instead promotes existing tools and resources by enabling their interoperability. As a result, it allows scholars to fully leverage the potential of material digitization and digital research tools without re-creating silos of resources in the digital realm.

Abstract: Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES) are widespread in conservation policy. In PES, environmental effectiveness and social equity are often perceived as conflicting goals. Empirical studies on the relationship between popular design features, such as payment differentiation and payment conditionality, and effectiveness and equity are scarce. Further, they struggle with measuring and separating ecological and equity outcomes. In this study, we combine two incentivized lab-in-the-field experiments with 259 land users from eight villages in North-Western Vietnam to assess both individual conservation effort and community-level equity perceptions under four different PES designs. Effort is measured in a real-effort task with real-world environmental benefits; equity perceptions about payment designs in the real-effort task are measured in a coordination game. We demonstrate that payment design affects both effort and equity perceptions. Payments which are differentiated and are solely conditional on individuals’ contributions of effort are perceived as most equitable. They are also more effective in motivating conservation effort than other designs, although the differences are small and not significant for all comparisons. By working out the positive correlation of effectiveness and equity across the four payment schemes, we show that these objectives are not necessarily conflicting goals in incentive-based conservation policy. Further, we can show that women exert greater conservation efforts. We discuss how greater equity and effectiveness could be achieved with reforms towards more input-based distribution criteria in Vietnam’s PES legislation and the limitations and opportunities of the experimental paradigm for research on PES.

Abstract: The use of the social accounting matrix (SAM) in income distribution analysis is a method recommended by economists. However, until now, there have only been a few SAM developed in Malaysia. The last SAM produced for Malaysia was developed in 1984 based upon data from 1970 and has not been updated since this time despite the significance changes in the structure of the Malaysian economy. The paper proposes a new Malaysian SAM framework to analyse public expenditure impact on income distribution in Malaysia. The SAM developed in the present paper is based on more recent data, providing an up-to date and coherent picture of the complexity of the Malaysian economy. The paper describes the structure of the SAM framework with a detailed aggregation and disaggregation of accounts related to public expenditure and income distribution issues. In the SAM utilized in the present study, the detailed framework of the different components of public expenditure in the production sectors and household groups is essential in the analysis of the different effects of the various public expenditure programmes on the incomes of households among different groups.

Abstract: People entering a new environment could experience a cultural shock. It can also happen to students who study at a place where the culture is different from their home culture as they mayfeel unsettled and anxious. Previous studies uncovered the sources of cultural shock, such as being a different culture, having different expectations, facing different customs, speaking a different dialect. Kalvero Oberg (1960) mentioned six negative feelings caused by culture shock, which were: (1) strain resulting from the effort of psychological adaption; (2) a sense of loss or deprivation referring to the removal of former friends, status, role, and possessions; (3) rejection by or rejection of the new culture; (4) confusion in the role definition, role expectations, feelings, and self-identity; (5) unexpected anxiety, disgust, or indignation regarding cultural differences between the old and new ways; and (6) feelings of helplessness as a result of not coping well in the new environment. Other adverse effects of a cultural shock were discouragement, lethargy, depression, suspicion, boredom, homesickness, anger, extreme sensitivity, irritability, loneliness and loss of familiarity. For students studying in a different cultural setting, this cultural shock may have a negativeimpact on them. This research aims to reveal the dominant cause of cultural shock and its effect on the students who are studying at Universitas Katolik De La Salle Manado-Indonesia. This study used the Analytical Hierarchy Process for data gathering and analysis. The respondents were students of Universitas Katolik De La Salle Manado who came from different provinces of the country. This study benefited the management of the University to improve the program that handled this cultural shock being experienced by the students to enhance their studies at the University.

Abstract: We quantify the economic impact of typhoons in the Philippines. To this end we construct a panel data set of local economic activity derived from nightlight intensity satellite images and a cell level measure of typhoon damage constructed from storm track data, a wind field model, and a stylized damage function. Our econometric results reveal that there is a statistically and potentially economically significant, albeit short- lived, impact of typhoon destruction on local economic activity. Constructing risk profiles from a 60-year historical set of storms suggests that (near) future losses in economic activity for frequent (5-year return period) and rare (50-year return period) events are likely to range from between 1.0% and 2.5%.

Abstract: This working paper was written as input for the Asian Development Outlook 2019. It reviews the literature at the intersection of disasters and migration in Asia and details the story of how disasters may affect mobility, from displacement to voluntary migration to “trapped populations.” It also provides an overview of the “migration as adaptation” literature, which shows that planned and sustained movement may help individuals weather shocks and diversify income in the face of disaster, as well as the uneven outcomes of disaster-related remittances in Asia. In addition, it gives insight into predicted impacts on mobility because of climate-related disasters and delves into the likely trends. Ultimately, it aims to show the diverse ways in which disaster-related migration may affect economic growth and social resilience in Asia.

Abstract: Batu Caves is a limestone hill that has a series of caves and cave temples in Gombak, Selangor, Malaysia. It takes its name from the Sungai Batu (Stone River), which flows past the hill. It is the tenth (Pattu in Tamil) limestone hill from Ampang. Batu Caves is also the name of a nearby village. The cave is one of the most popular Hindu shrines outside India, and is dedicated to Lord Murugan. It is the focal point of Hindu festival of Thaipusam in Malaysia. Batu Caves in short also referred as 10th Caves or Hill for Lord Murugan as there are six important holy shrines in India and four more in Malaysia. The three others in Malaysia are Kallumalai Temple in Ipoh, Tanneermalai Temple in Penang and Sannasimalai Temple in Malacca.

Abstract: In recent years, insurance against natural disasters has gained recognition as an important tool for climate risk management that could, if carefully implemented, help increase the resilience of those insured. In response, insurance solutions are increasingly tested and applied in many countries that have no prior experience with insurance or no existing market. This paper analyzes the status, types, and patterns of market-based disaster insurance schemes across emerging and developing countries in Asia. We provide a snapshot of the current use of insurance based on data from Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment’s Disaster Risk Transfer Scheme Database (2012–2018). Our analysis shows that although the use of insurance is expanding, there are many countries that still don’t have any kind of cover available. Where insurance mechanisms exist, they often rely on subsidies or bundling strategies. Although a mix of insurance schemes covering risks for governments (sovereign); or at meso (risk aggregators, cooperatives); and micro level currently operate to address a wide variety of climate and disaster risks, without demand-side support, many markets are likely to collapse or, at the very least, experience far lower penetration rates. We conclude with a discussion of the role of these insurance schemes in increasing resilience, which raises important questions for designing new and measuring and evaluating existing insurance schemes.

Abstract: This research aims to examine and analyze the effect of human resource management practices (i.e. leadership styles, employee commitment, work motivation, and work climate) on employee job satisfaction and employee performance. This study used primary data obtained through a survey to 221 employees as a sample. The result of Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) analysis shows that empirically the leadership style, employee commitment, work motivation, and work climate have positive and significant impact on job satisfaction. Leadership style, employee commitment, work motivation, and work climate, either directly or indirectly have a positive and significant effect on employee performance through job satisfaction as variable intervening. Job satisfaction has a direct positive and significant effect on employee performance. The direct effect of leadership styles, employee commitment, motivation and work climate on employee performance is positive, which means that when the exogenous variables improved the job satisfaction and employee performance will increase. The indirect effect of exogenous variable on employee performance through job satisfaction is positive. The total effect which is the sum of the direct and indirect effects through job satisfaction obtained positive value, which means there is effect of direct effect and indirect effect of exogenous variable on employee performance through job satisfaction.

Abstract: Firms with different ownership structures could be argued to have different levels of efficiency.Highly concentrated firms are expected to be more efficient as this type of ownership structure may alleviate the conflict of interest between managers and shareholders. In Malaysia, public-listed firms have been found to have highly concentrated ownership structure. However, whether this evidence holds for every industry has not been established.Hence, the objective of this paper is to investigate whether there are variations in ownership structure and firm's efficiency across sectors. To achieve this objective, the frequency distributions of ownership structure were calculated and firms efficiency scores for consumer products, industrial products, construction and trading/services sectors were measured.Data Envelopment Analysis(DEA) under the assumptions of constant returns to scale(CRS) and variable returns to scale(VRS) was employed to estimate firms efficiency scores.A sample of 156 firms listed on the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange(KLSE) was selected using the stratified random sampling method. The findings have shown that there are variations in firm ownership structure and efficiency across sectors.

Abstract: In the race to secure customers on competitive world oil markets, many oil producers are looking to China as a promising source of increased market share. The task of securing new customers in China can be challenging, as most of China’s recent growth in oil demand has come from ‘teapot refiners’ who have been less predictable, and more like the ‘wild west,’ than China’s national oil companies. Teapot refiners tend to be more focused on short-term profits than long-term relationships.

Abstract: The emergence of autonomous vehicles (AVs) is anticipated to influence the public transportation (PT) system. Many possible relationships between AV and PT are proposed depending on the policy and institution, where competition and cooperation are two main categories. This paper focuses on the former in a hypothetical scenario-"if both AV and PT operators were only profit-oriented." We aim to quantitatively evaluate the system performance (e.g. level of service, operators' financial viability, transport efficiency) when AV and PT are profit-oriented competitors with dynamic adjustable supply strategies under certain policy constraints. We assume AV can adjust the fleetsize and PT can adjust the headway. Service fare and bus routes are fixed. The competition process is analyzed through an agent-based simulation platform, which incorporates a proposed heuristic dynamic supply updating algorithm (HDSUA). The first-mile scenario in Singapore Tampines area is selected as the case study, where only bus is considered for PT system. We found that when AV and bus operators are given the flexibility to adjust supply, both of them will re-distribute their supply spatially and temporally, leading to higher profits. In temporal dimension, both AV and bus will concentrate their supplies in morning and evening peak hours, and reduce the supplies in off-peak hours. The competition between AV and PT decreases passengers' travel time but increase their travel cost. The generalized travel cost is still reduced when counting the value of time. The bus supply adjustment can increase the bus average load and reduce total passenger car equivalent (PCE), which is good for transport efficiency and sustainability. But the AV supply adjustment shows the opposite effect. Overall, the competition does not necessarily bring out loss-gain results. A win-win outcome is also possible under certain policy interventions.

Abstract: Accounting ratios are believed to be of fundamental importance in financial analysis, and therefore are useful addition to financial reports. This paper examines the reporting of voluntary accounting ratio by Malaysian companies in corporate annual reports. Drawing on agency and signaling theories, this paper explores whether associations exist between company performance and voluntary disclosure of accounting ratios. In particular, associations are tested between the extent of ratio disclosure and company performance (namely profitability, liquidity, leverage, and company efficiency), size and industry. Six hypotheses are tested using data collected from 2003 annual reports of 100 Malaysian listed companies. This paper provides evidence that the extent of voluntary ratio disclosure is low; and size, industry as well as liquidity significantly influence the reporting of ratios in corporate annual reports. The implications of these findings are discussed.

Abstract: The main focus of the human security concept is understanding the security in the broad dimension that is concerned to socio-economic, health and environmental conditions which threaten the physical security of individual. Human rights, the human basic values, has been regulated in international law. Human trafficking is a basic issue of both concepts. Human trafficking has violated and flattened the values of human security concepts as well as human rights that have become a common precept. On the issue of human trafficking, human security and human rights are phenomena which prove that human existence becomes the main concern of the completion. This paper is a qualitative method, explaining the issue by literature review and interview as well as research refers to various national and international instruments relating to human trafficking. This study argued that in Indonesia, particularly in East Nusa Tenggara, it is vulnerable to human trafficking practices that have an impact on individual insecurity and human rights violations. The rise of human trafficking cases proves that the existence of individual security needs to be considered. East Nusa Tenggara is one of the most vulnerable areas of human trafficking in Indonesia, this mainly due to the economic, educational and other sectors. Financial needs that became the main thing in life in the community became their main cause trapped in the case of human trafficking. In addition, the lack of public understanding about human trafficking is the reason to become victims. The role of the government as an obliging and responsible actor to protect the citizens is not significant, one of which socialization to various regions of human trafficking has not been maximal, which is only done at the government level. Furthermore, the response to the victimized community has not been maximally handling.

Over the five years since its inception, the BRI has expanded in both geographic and strategic scope. As of early 2019, 141 countries and 29 international organizations have joined the initiative, which has broadened from targeting infrastructure connectivity and logistics to wider goals of unimpeded trade, financial integration, policy coordination and people-to-people bonds. Thousands of BRI projects have already been approved, with a total investment potential of $1.2-1.3 trillion by 2027 (IDSA 2019, Morgan Stanley 2018).

Abstract: This study proposes a new approach for quantifying two kinds of costs related to the utilization of regional trade agreements (RTAs). The first, which we call the “procurement adjustment cost,” represents the cost involved in meeting rules of origin through the adjustment of procurement sources. The second is the additional fixed costs required to utilize RTAs, including document preparation costs for the certification of origin. The proposed approach makes it possible to compute these two costs separately using product-level data. It is built on a model of international trade where heterogeneous exporters decide which tariff scheme to use. Applying our approach to Thailand’s imports from China, our estimates suggest that procurement adjustment costs to comply with RTA rules of origin at the median are equivalent to 4% of per-unit production costs. In addition, RTA utilization requires an additional 27% of fixed costs. Furthermore, simulation analysis shows that a reduction of the additional fixed costs by half would raise the RTA utilization rate by 13 percentage points, while the complete elimination of procurement adjustment costs would raise the RTA utilization rate by 32 percentage points.

Abstract: International migration is an essential element of economic integration. Yet, the intraregional movement of people and labor in Asia and the Pacific has stagnated in recent years even as the flow of goods, services, and investment have steadily risen. This paper examines key factors driving the movement of people from and within the region using bilateral international migrant stock data. Our analysis shows that commonly known determinants such as income differences; population size; and political, geographical, and cultural proximities between the migrant source and destination countries are associated with greater movement, along with the growing share of older population in destination economies and the similarities in the level of educational attainment. The paper also finds that cross-border migration is affected, in varied directions, by the degree of economic integration between the source and destination economies, especially through bilateral trade and value chain links. The offshoring of production—and hence jobs and other economic opportunities—to migrant source countries suppresses outmigration, but the expected rise in the source country income will eventually promote migration by relaxing financial constraints.

Abstract: This paper employs a bivariate BEKK-GARCH(1,1) model to examine shock and volatility spillovers between crude oil and stock markets by taking into account the impact of the 2008 global financial crisis. Daily data from crude oil market and the Thai stock market during February 6, 2004 and September 14, 2015 are used in the analyses. The whole sample is divided into the pre- and post- crisis periods. The results show that there are no spillover effects between oil price and stock returns in the pre-crisis period. In the post-crisis period, there are unilateral spillover effects from oil price to some equity sector returns. In the market level, there are unilateral spillovers of shock and volatility from oil price to stock market return. The findings in this paper are crucial for financial market participations to understand shock and volatility transmissions from oil to stock markets such that portfolio management should take into account the presence of oil price risk.

Abstract: This paper estimates the growth impact of disasters, with a focus on developing Asia and its subregions. It finds that severe disasters slow down annual growth in the Pacific island countries by between 1 and 2 percentage points on average. This should come as no surprise, given these economies’ extreme exposure, structural vulnerability, and small size relative to the footprint of major natural hazards. The growth impact is less clear for other regions and worldwide, mainly because disaster effects tend to be highly localized and get diluted in the context of cross-country regressions with nationwide growth as the unit of analysis.

Abstract: This paper evaluates a Filipino policy that expanded health insurance coverage of its senior citizens, aged 60 and older, in 2014. Using regression discontinuity and difference-in-differences methods, we find that the expansion increases insurance coverage by approximately 16 percentage points. We show that the compliers, those induced by the policy to obtain insurance, are disproportionately female and largely from the middle of the socioeconomic distribution. Instrumental variables estimates indicate that out-of-pocket medical expenditures more than double among the compliers. We argue that this is most likely driven by an outward shift in the medical demand curve.

Abstract: This paper empirically investigates the relationship between the speed of buildup of private debt (household and corporate) and the depth of recessions. To do this, we differentiate between financial recessions and normal recessions on the basis of how quickly their private debt builds up. In addition to output recessions, we look at consumption and investment recessions. We find that financial recessions are deeper than normal recessions in advanced economies—and the differences become even more pronounced when emerging market economies are added to the sample. Our evidence suggests that a buildup in corporate debt is especially damaging for emerging markets during financial recessions. A higher ratio of debt to gross domestic product—in other words, less fiscal space—exacerbates recessions only beyond a certain threshold level, suggesting a nonlinear effect. We find that the buildup of corporate debt—and not just household debt—can worsen recessions, especially in emerging market economies.

Abstract: Using a case study approach, this research explores the various potential limiting factors of climate change adaptation, based on the experience of four low-lying islands in central Philippines. In the aftermath of the 2013 7.2-magnitude Bohol earthquake, the islands now become flooded even during normal spring tides. Results show that, while development problems can constrain adaptive capacity against climate hazards, the outlook of the affected communities about their future on their home islands may ultimately determine the limits of adaptation. As social factors may play a greater role in adaptation than environmental factors, climate-smart development is needed, as well as proper education regarding climate risks and available adaptation options.

Using interaction and system approach, which use to test of fit between contextual and organizational variables, tested the hypothesis. Therefore, this research has theoretical and methodological meanings. The data was collected from managers of Bank Perkreditan Rakyat (BPR), where the Branch of Indonesian Central Bank at Makassar has supervised them. There are 97 samples was collected by using mail survey and was chosen by purposive random sampling. The variables include PEU, control systems and financial performances. According to early literature, the control systems were categorized into operational control systems, management control systems and strategic planning, while financial performance was measured by ROA. The result indicates that control systems affected to financial performance, which involved PEU and using system approach. Any way, based on this research, the system approach is better than interaction approach.

Abstract: Background The Rohingya people of Myanmar have been subject to government-sponsored discrimination, detention, violence, and torture, causing several waves of a mass exodus to Bangladesh. Since August 2017, when the latest wave of migration began, there has been a rapid expansion of refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, with camps now accommodating approximately 335,000 new refugees. In this rapidly changing scenario, assessing the needs of the Rohingya and the host communities in Cox’s Bazar is critical for prioritizing resource allocation. We conducted a rapid needs assessment survey in both the Rohingya and host communities in Cox’s Bazar to highlight the most pressing needs in the community. Methods We conducted a randomized survey of 402 recently-arrived Rohingya households and 400 households in the local host community, from March 15 to March 18, 2018. The survey collected information on household demographics, mortality, education of all members, income, and livelihoods, access to food and water, vaccination, and access and utilization of healthcare. We calculated descriptive statistics and appropriate standard errors for survey responses on these topics. Findings The sampled Rohingya households were younger than the host community households. Two-thirds of the reported deaths in the Rohingya households in the last 12 months were among male household members, with a low overall mean age at death (38.7 years). The majority (76·0%) of Rohingya household members, above the age of 15, reported having had no education, and 52·6% of Rohingya children were not attending school. Nearly all (93·5%) Rohingya households reported a decrease in income over the last 12 months, with 79.9% reporting no current income. Mean reported income in the host community was not significantly different between 2018 and the previous two years. We found high levels of reported food insecurity among the Rohingya, which was also reflected in their prioritization of food over all else if provided additional cash assistance, and in their borrowing money to procure food. The majority (61·7%) of Rohingya children, under two, had received zero doses of injectable vaccines in Myanmar, and of them, 24·8% had also not received any injectable vaccines in Bangladesh. For oral vaccines, 57·5% of children, under two, had received zero doses in Myanmar, of whom 29·6% had also not received any oral doses in Bangladesh. In comparison, children in the host community had much higher rates of vaccination. Some Rohingya households reported challenges in accessing healthcare (14·2%), with the majority reporting distance to a healthcare facility as the main cause. In the host community, 32·5% of all surveyed households reported issues accessing healthcare, with wide variation (0 to 57·6%) among locations. Interpretation The results of this rapid needs assessment offer important insights into the most pressing challenges facing the Rohingya while providing contextual information about the neighboring Bangladeshi communities hosting them. The Rohingya population is greatly impoverished, with very low levels of education. While growing evidence globally demonstrates the prudence in formally integrating refugees into the labor force, doing so in Bangladesh will entail strategic investment in imparting skills and education to the host and migrant populations, with a particular focus on women. Resources should also be allocated to address pressing needs such as food shortages and vaccination gaps. Abstract: Internet crimes, also known as Cyber-crimes are act punishable by law. Nigeria government, in order to curb excessiveness of Internet crimes enacted different regulatory and prohibitory laws in support of views of some theorists who claimed that social factors increase users’ vulnerability to computer and Internet attacks. Social factors such as security policy severity, security policy certainty, attitude and attachment have little or no significant relationship with the level of Internet crimes in Nigeria; involvement as a social factor has the strongest significant relationship with the level of Internet crimes in Nigeria; this is followed by commitment, belief and knowledge. Internet users can be tricked, conned and sometimes forcefully compelled to compromise and breach security metrics; security metrics are easily breached if users do not understand or employ security mechanism. Presented in this paper is the survey of the contributory factors to Internet crimes in Nigeria. Data used were gathered by questionnaire.
