Abstract: Traditionally, financial distress and lack of access to opportunities have been seen as among the most important determinants of corporate wrongdoing. Applying performance feedback theory to the context of emerging country companies (ECCs), we seek to show that the biggest wrongdoers are ‘best in class’ companies with better performance than that of their industry peers. Using an original dataset, we examine the involvement in business-related human rights controversies (HRCs) for a sample of 245 large public companies from Brazil, China, India, Malaysia, Mexico, Russia, South Africa, and Thailand during the period 1992-2012. We find ECCs with good financial performance (relative to their industry peers) are more likely to be involved in HRCs but that this probability is attenuated if these companies invest in host countries characterized by strong regulatory enforcement which demonstrates the importance of internationalization for reducing wrongful business conduct. We find evidence also that firm self-regulatory policies (i.e. adoption of corporate social responsibility policies) work to mitigate the probability of high performers violating human rights in the conduct of their business. We discuss the contribution to research on the antecedents to corporate wrongdoing, and for performance feedback theory.

Abstract: Educational inequality is one of the most prevalent problems faced by developing countries. The group that faces the biggest gap in terms of access to education is adolescents aged 16-18 years. This paper analyses a sample of 16-18 year olds to investigate the impact of the Indonesian's Conditional Cash Transfer, Bantuan Siswa Miskin (BSM), on recipients and their non-recipient siblings. The findings suggest that the BSM increases the schooling of the recipients. However, there is no significant impact on the non-recipient siblings' schooling. Further, the program succeeds in significantly reducing the incidence of child labour for recipient and non-recipient girls, with no such impact evident for boys.

Abstract: Abstrak.

Abstract: This research aims to: (i) identify banking performance indicators that can potentially become the basis for risk-based deposit insurance premium in Indonesia, (ii) estimate risk-based deposit insurance rates for individual banks; and (iii) approximate the incurred costs of premium for individual banks. The results show that a number of banking performance indicators that can be used as the basis for risk-based deposit insurance premium encompass such as capital adequacy ratio (CAR), loan to deposit ratio (LDR), non-performing loans, (NPL), and cost to income ratio (CIR). CAR poses the largest weight of 48.48 per cent. Another result estimates the risk-based deposit insurance rates for individual banks ranging from 0.200 to 0.352 per cent per annum. The other result reveals that big banks do not always have a better risk management compared to small banks. Also, banks with a good risk management, indicated by low scores in this research, will burden the same premium costs either based on risk-based scheme or the current flat rate scheme.

Abstract: Drawing on the experience of Indonesian firms, we seek to improve the understanding of the internationalization process in emerging market firms faced with a deterioration of their trade conditions. Using matching methods to deal with endogeneity, we empirically analyse inward-outward internationalization connections in two years (2009 and 2015) to test whether these connections change following a reversal of trade liberalization. We focus on importing and exporting activities and we validate the theoretical underpinnings of the claim that importing Indonesian firms export more. We contribute to the literature by introducing a newly-identified underlying mechanism behind the positive relationship between imports and exports: when trade barriers are low, firms that import intermediates sourced from ?complex? value chains achieve significant increases in their exports. We do this by merging the firm-level data with the industry-level data (derived from World Input-Output Database) to construct additional firm-level variables that estimate the proportion of firms? imported inputs that cross border once or more. To deal with selection bias, we match each importing firm with a control group of non-importing firms that, in terms of their labour productivity, foreign ownership, employment and other characteristics, are equally likely to import. We show that when an emerging country facilitates sourcing from foreign countries, firms in that country export more. However, this positive causal effect is channelled through ?complex? importing (that is, when firms import intermediates that have crossed international borders several times). ?Simple? importing (that is, when firms import intermediates that have crossed an international border only once?in this case, the Indonesian border) does not increase firms? exports in periods of trade liberalization. Conversely, ?simple? importing becomes more relevant for exports in periods of trade liberalization reversal. In such circumstances, emerging market firms? participation in value chains becomes less global. Our results are robust to the choice of matching technique and specification. Relevant policy implications can be made: for example, in a world marked by growing scepticism surrounding globalization and openness to international trade and competition, policy makers should bear in mind that policies inhibiting importing activities have negative consequences for exports and hence, the outward internationalization of firms.

Abstract: Sharia banking industry in Indonesia has been established since early 1990s and growing remarkably after 1998. How the industry contributed to the Indonesian economy and what shocks drove the sharia banks' financing in Indonesia were investigated in this paper using a Structural Vector Auto-regression (SVAR) model with recursive short run restrictions as its identification strategy. The results showed that GDP growth, core inflation, and business activity responded to increase in sharia banks' financing positively, but with lags. Expanding sharia financing by 1 per cent boosted up GDP growth by 0.06 per cent. In the short-run, the contribution of sharia banks' financing to the macroeconomic variables was limited, but it then escalated in the long run with the main channel of transmission through its ability to drive people's purchasing power. Another result showed that sharia banks' financing had a negative relationship with the central bank's monetary policy. In order to improve the performance of sharia banking in Indonesia, the demands of domestic sharia financing have to be strengthened with regards to the large number of Moslems in Indonesia. At the same time, Islamic banks have to improve their business processes. Rather than capping their profit margins or murabahah-based financing, they should promote more profit sharing mudharabah-based financing with prioritizing principle of mutual help among Moslems.

Abstract: This study aims to describe the implementation of public policy from the perspective of Dye's theory of spatial planning for housing in Semarang Regency. The primary data used in this study were obtained from ten informants as the representatives of each business activity who proposed location permits for housing activities. While the secondary data were obtained from the Public Works Office of Semarang Regency. The results show that there were ten investment activity plans for housing in Semarang Regency, whose proposals were not approved initially by the relevant agencies because they were not in accordance with the provisions of spatial planning. This study provide evidence from ten informants there are eight cases as follows space utilization through a land consolidation program, space utilization in a wide & river border area, space utilization in vacant spatial planning area, space utilization for communities affected by railroad project, space utilization in spatial planning area of crop farming, space utilization with a housing certificate status, space utilization in plantation planning area, and space utilization in the vacant spatial planning area adjacent to the border of other city administration area. However, after being considered by the government in terms of public policy, the ten location permits were issued with certain conditions. Thus, it could be concluded that the public policy was essentially designed by the government to guarantee and fulfill the needs of the community in conducting investment activities such as housing developers.

Abstract: Abstrak.

Abstract: This paper analyzes a WTO DS case that discussed integral aspects of import restrictions by Indonesia as an emerging economy – a representative example of its protectionist measures. In this case, first, (1) regarding "import restriction" under GATT Article 11.1, the Panel found a broad range of various measures to have limiting effects on importation, and thus to be inconsistent with GATT Article 11.1, by finding, among others, a certain individual measure lacking implementation provisions to have uncertainty and unpredictability, and an integral and comprehensive import license measure consisting of various individual measures to be an independent measure with synergistic effect (not appealed). While the referenced legal standard was not new, the finding may have restraining effects on protectionist import measures. Also, (2) as for justifications, the Panel clearly rejected Indonesia's claims that certain measures do not fall under subparagraphs (a), (b), or (d) of GATT Article 20 which were not detailed enough, as the measures do not even have such connections with the alleged policy objectives that they are "not incapable" of contributing to such objectives (not appealed). Lastly, (3) with regard to relationship between GATT Article 11 and Agriculture Agreement Article 4.2, the Appellate Body clarified that these provisions provide the same obligation regarding the prohibition of import restriction measure on agricultural products and that GATT Article 11.2(c) cannot be claimed as exceptions/justifications for the inconsistency with Agriculture Agreement Article 4.2.

Abstract: Indonesia had recorded a large amount of carbon emissions from forests and peatland fires in last decade. This study therefore, investigates the effect of forest fires and oil palm plantations on GHG (Green-House Gases) emissions in Indonesia using the econometrics approach. The statistical result indicates that fire incidences (hotspots) do have a positive significant effect on GHG emissions in Indonesia. This implies that people still use fire as medium for land clearing in the forest. The coefficients of oil palm plantation measurement on GHG emission are positive, implying that land clearing process in forest and peatland areas and converting them into oil palm plantations have increased GHG emissions. To establish a system for sustainable forest management, it will be crucial that the government maintain the enforcement of legal sanctions to every aspect who burning the forests deliberately.

Abstract: Little literature currently exists on the effects of childcare use on maternal labor market outcomes in a developing country context, and the few recent studies offer mixed results. We attempt to fill these gaps by analyzing several latest rounds of the Vietnam Household Living Standards Survey spanning the early to mid-2010s. Addressing endogeneity issues with a regression discontinuity estimator based on children's birth months, we find a sizable effect of childcare attendance on women's labor market outcomes, including their total annual wages, household income, and poverty status. The effects of childcare attendance differ by women's characteristics and are particularly strong for younger, more educated women. Furthermore, we also find that childcare has a medium-term effect.

Abstract: The best alternative for companies in Indonesia to survive in the midst of global economic uncertainty is by transforming their business and human resources, given that changes in business concepts are highly driven and patterned by advances in information technology that are exponentially increasing. The innovative steps of transformation, however, should refer to Good Corporate Governance, as an operational foundation and guarantee trust from stakeholders. The era of economic disruption requires companies in Indonesia to always generate new values in all aspects so that performance can increase and the companies are able to survive in the market by gaining positive profits. Human resources management is also very important, especially when there is employee engagement in facing threats originating from the external environment. This study is qualitative research with the interpretive paradigm, based on reality or the phenomenon that occurs. The findings were in the form of comprehensive analysis according to the primary and secondary data that the researchers have successfully explored.

Abstract: The typical problem of tourism studies at the level of tourism destinations is when a destination has started to run well, it may arise contestation between actors in the management of tourism destinations. From a traditional view, tourism resources are static physical elements such as land, forest, water, or wildlife that put more emphasis on physical signs itself but putting aside the important human role on it. Indeed the contemporary study of tourism does not just cease at these physical signs. Unequal distribution of resources and management of resources will lead contestation in management to become acrimonious. From a development viewpoint, government programs can be constructive and also destructive when the rationality of the government in constructive development collide with the rationality of social capital that has grown with the community. So the development of Community-Based Tourism (CBT) as one of the tourism model, it is necessary to study so that it constantly become a booster of regional economies. This paper will conduct studies and comparisons of several leading tourist villages in Indonesia that will conform to the specificities of East Java to be implemented. Findings in this paper are the investment in the tourism sector is an interesting alternative investment. Tourism offers long-term benefits which are environmentally friendly. A proper implementation of CBT, social cohesiveness should be the primary value, and it is exactly important to reinforce social capital instead of financial capital. It is due to the continuity of CBT will be longer when using empowerment approach to strengthening social capital instead by money driven. The potential of cohesiveness among Muslims through religious institutions such as Nahdatul Ulama has a huge role in supporting the achievement of CBT in East Java, given the strength of social capital that already exists in the community. What is needed is leadership that is able to create triggers so that the development of tourism sector can be run supported the existing social capital mechanism, so that its hopes CBT more sustainable, given social capital including capital that will not run out

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to explore the perception of Information Technology (IT) fresh graduates on employability in Vietnam. The research is based on primary data from responses in in-depth interviews from 10 fresh graduates working in the IT industry for at least 3 months. A generic qualitative approach and the employability framework of Hillage & Pollard guide this research. Interview protocol is also provided for semi-structured interviews. The findings show a strong awareness of employability among fresh graduates in terms of the assets they own like knowledge, skill, attitudes; deployment; presentation; and context of the labor market. However, the findings also point out a huge area of knowledge and soft skills which need improvement to enhance graduates’ employability. They are advanced IT knowledge, cross-sector knowledge, and a lot of soft skills such as presentation skill, communication skill, management skill, problem solving skill, logical and critical thinking skill, self-study skill, information search-skill, asking question skill, foreign language skill, and adaptation skill. The study provides valuable implications to employers, educators and new young employees in fresh graduates’ employability enhancement by pointing out weak areas for improvement.

Abstract: The reasons for this exploratory investigation are to give a comprehension of the role of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the new product development (NPD) procedure of SMEs in Vietnam and make a comparison between the NPD process and a particular case from the personal interview. The goal is to explore whether particular industries fully follow the NPD process or not. Firstly, discover the meaning of family business and SMEs; secondly, the NPD procedure; thirdly, using the NPD in the particular setting of SMEs (comparison). In addition, there are two questions, which are “How do small and medium-sized businesses conduct NPD activities?”, and “Which are the enabling factors and the constraining factors for NPD?”

Abstract: This paper empirically examines asymmetric transmissions from money market rates to various consumer rates throughout a sample period that comprises monetary policy shifting in Indonesia from 2011 to 2017. We adopt modification of Asymmetric Error Correction Models (AECM), which incorporate three-error correction term. This allows us to inspect the different adjustment when the disequilibria are: large-positive, large-negative, and small. Our findings shows that there are varying asymmetric adjustment in response to different shocks across products in lending market. Thus, the monetary authorities should notice that both easing and tightening monetary policy appear to have varying impact to different credit market.

Abstract: Pemanfaatan Teknologi Informasi (TI) di perusahaan jasa logistik skala kecil dan menengah masih sangat minim.

Abstract: Women are known to bear the largest share of health, time and labor supply burden associated with a lack of modern energy. In this paper, we study the impact of clean energy access on adult health and labor supply outcomes by exploiting a nationwide rollout of clean cooking fuel program in Indonesia. This program led to a large-scale fuel switching, from kerosene, a dirty fuel, to liquid petroleum gas, a significantly cleaner and efficient cooking fuel than kerosene. Using rich longitudinal survey data from the Indonesia Family Life Survey and the staggered structure of the program roll-out, we find that access to clean cooking fuel led to a significant improvement in women's health, particularly among those who spend most of their time indoors doing housework. We also find an increase in the labor supplied by these women on both intensive and extensive margins. This suggests that having clean and efficient cooking fuel may not only improve women's health but also improve their productivity, subsequently allowing them to supply more market labor. For men, we find an increase in the labor supplied only along the intensive margin, with a higher increase among men in households where women accrued the largest health and labor benefits from the program. These results highlight the role of clean energy in reducing gender-disparity in health and labor participation and point to the existence of positive externality from improved health and productivity of women on other members of the household.

Abstract: Most manufacturing activities use inputs from the financial and business services sectors. But these services sectors also compete for resources with manufacturing activities, provoking concerns about deindustrialization attributable to financial services in developed countries like the United States and United Kingdom, and business services in developing countries like India and the Philippines. This paper examines the implications of services development for the export performance of manufacturing sectors. We develop a methodology to quantify the indirect role of services in international trade in goods and construct new measures of revealed comparative advantage based on value-added exports. We show that the development of financial and business services enhances the revealed comparative advantage of manufacturing sectors that use these services intensively but not of other manufacturing sectors. We also find that a country can partially overcome the handicap of an underdeveloped domestic services sector by relying more on imported services inputs. Thus, lower services trade barriers in developing countries can help to promote their manufacturing exports.

Abstract: We project the population of United States veterans between 2014 and 2024 using a cohort component population projection method that provides estimates by age, sex, race/ethnicity, service era and geographic location. We also analyze distance of the projected veteran population to medical and health centers. Our research strategy integrates several methodological procedures, which can be applied to other subgroups of the American population in order to estimate future demographic trends at the local level. Baseline data for national projections came from the 2000 Census, which was the last census to collect information about veterans. We factored in estimates of mortality, adjusted for demographic characteristics, and added data from the U.S. Department of Defense on veterans entering the population after 2000. We estimated migration flows of veterans within the country using gravity models. Supplementary data came from American Community Surveys and accounted for a variety of factors, including age, sex, race/ethnicity, service era, population size of sending and receiving areas, and distance between areas. We project that the population of U.S. veterans will decrease by 19 percent over the next 10 years: from 21.6 million in 2014 to 17.5 million in 2024. The population will have a slightly higher proportion of older veterans. There will be modest changes in the demographic mix by sex and race/ethnicity. Between 2014 and 2024, the proportion of female veterans will increase 3 percentage points, from 8 to 11 percent. The share of non-Hispanic white males will decrease from 80 to 76 percent over the same period. The service era composition will change in the period. Veterans from the Vietnam conflict will decrease from 31 to 29 percent, while those from the Gulf War and Post-9/11 conflict will increase from 27 to 42 percent between 2014 and 2024. We estimate that, geographically, the veteran population will become more concentrated in urban areas, and the relative proportion of their population in the Ohio River Valley region will diminish.

Abstract: Migration is a standard survival strategy in the context of disasters. While prior studies have examined factors associated with return migration following disasters, an area that remains relatively under explored is whether moving home to one's original community results in improved health and well-being compared to other options such as deciding to move on. In the present study, we seek to address this gap in the literature through examining whether return migration, compared to other migration options, results in superior improvements to mental health. We draw upon data from a pilot study conducted 16 months after a series of volcanic eruptions in Merapi, Indonesia. Using ordinal logistic regression, we find that compared to respondents who were still displaced, respondents who had ``moved home'' were less likely to report poor mental health status (OR = 0.50 [95\% CI = 0.26, 0.95]). Likewise, respondents who had ``moved on'' were less likely to report poor mental health status (OR = 0.38 [95\% CI = 0.13, 1.04]). The results suggest that while moving home was an improvement from being displaced, it may have been better to move on, as this yielded superior associations with self-reported mental health.

Abstract: In this working paper, I argue that the ways in which communities engage in strategies of contention are mediated by what I call 'subsoil imaginaries': how peoples and communities imagine and give meaning to the subsoil and its extraction. In so doing, I approach the subsoil as a site on and through which strategies of contention gain form and content, and at the same time as a resource that is produced through such (political) discursive and practical activities. It is on this site that this paper explores strategies of contention as a negotiation of rights between political subjects and the state that is mediated by subsoil imaginaries. Strategies of contention are mediated by subsoil imaginations in two dimensions. First, conflicts and contestations over resource use are often rooted in different ideas and imaginaries of resource use and the subsoil. Natural resources can be valued as indigenous territory, as a part of livelihood, in terms of biodiversity, and as combinations thereof. Such meanings clash with the monetary valuations on which most extractive projects are based. Second, extractive projects cause conflicts over distribution, as well as over recognition and participation; it is not only about the environmental consequences of subsoil extraction but also (if not foremost) about power, democracy and citizenship. These claims of social justice, as I will show, are also shaped by imaginaries of the subsoil. The paper builds on research on resistance, citizenship and subsoil extraction since 2010 in Latin America, the Philippines and the Netherlands.

Abstract: We propose a hybrid quantum-classical algorithm, originated from quantum chemistry, to price European and Asian options in the Black-Scholes model. Our approach is based on the equivalence between the pricing partial differential equation and the Schrodinger equation in imaginary time. We devise a strategy to build a shallow quantum circuit approximation to this equation, only requiring few qubits. This constitutes a promising candidate for the application of Quantum Computing techniques (with large number of qubits affected by noise) in Quantitative Finance.

Abstract: Nigeria is one of the most malnourished and hunger ridden in the league of developing countries; according to reports of Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) of United Nations estimated daily animal protein intake for developing countries averaged at 4.5 g/head/day at the beginning of this century which has hardly rose to 10 g/head/day into the second decade of the century in Nigeria; a value comparably low to 35 g/head/day global recommendation. Among middle income level countries where animal protein intake is 16 g/head/day; the intake of 10 g/head/day in Nigeria is still low. World Food Programme (WFP) also reported that one third of children less than five (5) years old in Nigeria are stunted due to poor nutrition and this is twice the rate of such incidence in Thailand and three times that of Tunisia which are also developing countries like Nigeria; all these are strong pointers to malnutrition especially inadequate intake of animal proteins. This call for increase supply of animal protein to address the poor intake; but Nigeria animal protein supply depends on pastoral livestock production on extensive natural grassland. This production system is under challenges of climate and poor production techniques; hence government effort towards improvement via establishment of grazing reserve is a way out. This will allow deliberate efforts to improve productivity of the pastoral cattle, encourage corporate investment in livestock production sub-sector, participation of private foreign investors and adaptive climate change management. Unfortunately, these efforts has been under threats of claims which this paper identified as ethno – religious sentiments. Therefore, this paper discussed Nigeria livestock production, Climate change effects on Nigeria livestock production and its social implications, sources of ethno-religious violence linked to livestock production in Nigeria, grazing reserve bills in Nigeria – the proponents, the opponents and what are the pitfalls, food insecurity – the need for modification and re-introduction of grazing reserves bill in Nigeria then suggested Taylor Grazing Reserve Act of United States as a model for re – introduction of grazing reserves bill in Nigeria.

Abstract: This article integrates research on the internationalisation processes of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) and export assistance services to investigate how such firms use support services drawing upon a large, qualitative study of 32 French traditional SMEs and international new ventures (INVs) that have entered Asia. Our key contribution is to consider the time to internationalisation (gradual or rapid) and the stage of internationalisation (entrance or intensification) rather than export intensity alone, and to examine how support services can help SMEs internationalise. The identification of different configurations of uses leads to the development of theoretical propositions that extend existing models pertaining to support services and firm internationalisation. These findings have several important managerial implications for support services to target their offer more precisely to two types of SMEs; they also provide useful guidance for SMEs to determine which tailor-made offerings from private and public actors are most applicable to their internationalisation efforts.

Abstract: Despite widespread exposure to substantial medical expenditure risk in low-income populations, health insurance enrollment is typically low. This is puzzling from the perspective of expected utility theory. To help explain it, this paper introduces a decomposition of the stated willingness to pay (WTP) for insurance into its fair price and three behavioral deviations from that price due to risk perception and risk attitude consistent with prospect theory, plus a residual. To apply this approach, we elicit WTP, subjective distributions of medical expenditures and risk attitude (utility curvature and probability weighting) from Filipino households in a nationwide survey. We find that the mean stated WTP of the uninsured is less than both the actuarially fair price and the subsidized price at which public insurance is offered. This is not explained by downwardly biased beliefs: both the mean and the median subjective expectation are greater than the subsidized price. Convex utility in the domain of losses pushes mean WTP below the fair price and the subsidized price, and the transformation of probabilities into decision weights depresses the mean further, at least using one of two specific decompositions. WTP is reduced further by factors other than risk perception and attitude.

Abstract: The issue of disruptive operators has recently gained interest among researchers and regulators. From a regulator's perspective, disruptive operators can increase competitive rivalry in markets dominated by a handful of large companies, thus allowing consumers to obtain more benefits in terms of price and quality. However, the "disruptive" qualification of an operator in related studies does not rely on a precise definition of disruption. The disruption theory, as developed by Christensen, provides such a definition but may be too restrictive. In addition, it may not be adapted to the analysis of disruption in regulated industries such as telecommunications. In this paper, we aim at deepening our understanding of disruption in the case of the Telecommunications industry, by analysing cases of mobile operators who entered the industry thanks to 3G or 4G licences. To this end we first analyse the disruption theory literature and highlight its characteristics and limitations. It allows us to propose an eclectic analytical framework of disruptive innovations that does not restrict to Christensen's theory. We then apply it to different cases of disruptive mobile operators in order to identify the level and pattern of disruption inherent to each case, and to compare them. We conclude by discussing our findings and further research perspectives.
