Abstract: Trend inflation estimates for 12 of the largest Asian economies over 1995-2018 offer important insights on inflation dynamics and inflation expectations. The disinflationary shocks that hit the region since 2014 were partly transitory, but their effects have been different depending on the behaviour of trend inflation in each country. Countries with relatively high inflation (India, Philippines, Indonesia) benefited, and some were impacted very mildly (China, Taiwan, Hong Kong SAR, Malaysia). Among countries with inflation below target, in those with trend inflation low but constant (Australia, New Zealand) low inflation maybe lasting, but temporary, while those in which trend inflation has declined (South Korea, Thailand) risk low inflation to become entrenched and a de-anchoring of expectations. This diverse international evidence could offer important lessons for monetary policy worldwide. JEL Classification: C11, C32, E31, F41

Kata Kunci: Legislatif, UU MD3, Membungkam, Eleftheria, Kebebasan Berekspresi, Negara Merdeka The public discourse of the revision of the MD3 Law raises the pros and cons in Indonesian society, including the students of FISIPOL UMY. This position paper is intended as a discussion material to deepen the students' knowledge of the revision of the MD3 Law and consideration to take action from the revision of the MD3 Law. This position paper discusses three key issues: the legal basis of the MD3 Law, the revised background of the MD3 Law and the problematic of the revision of the MD3 Law: is it really an effort to silence eleftheria in an independent (Indonesia) country?. This position paper uses qualitative descriptive method with data collection techniques using literature review, then data sources using publicly accessible (online) publications, and data analysis with data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion/verification. This position paper highlights the concerns arising from the revision of the MD3 Law which is considered to be an attempt to block the freedom of expression (eleftheria) in an independent state, which has been influenced by past experience, where the Indonesian government was once regarded as the perpetrator of the silencing of freedom of expression which still remains in the public mind. Thus, the concerns that arise not only on the rules itself, but also the implementation that sometimes does not match expectations as written. Abstract: Background: Indonesia is a country with rich natural resources. Tobacco is one of the plants that are cultivated in the tropical climate of Indonesia. Unfortunately, the cultivation of tobacco in Indonesia does not produce varied products, instead, many of the tobacco farmers only serve as a supplier of raw materials for the tobacco industry and this position makes the farmers vulnerable and loses their bargaining power against the industry. On the other hand, tobacco products such as cigarettes contribute big revenues from tobacco excise and becomes an obstacle to tobacco control efforts in Indonesia because their contribution in state revenues reached up to IDR 98,62 trillion in 2013. The risk for tobacco farmers to lose their livelihoods and the contribution of the tobacco industry to state revenues are the reasons various parties reject legalization of the WHO FCTC in Indonesia. This research tried to analyze further the Indonesian government’s position towards WHO FCTC. Methods: This research was used qualitative approach and using in-depth interview to collect data from informant. The data was collected to identify the influential factors, key actors and strategy to accelerate the process of ratification of the WHO FCTC. There were informant from the government and non-government organizations (NGOs) selected by purposive sampling to answer the in-depth interview. Analysis was done by filtering method. Results: The research finding showed there is four factors affecting the ratification that are technical feasibility, economic and financial viability, political viability, and administrative operability. But the most influencing factor is the political viability. There are two party that affect the party who support the government and campaign for public health as a priority of the government, while at the other party of the cigarette industry with a variety of efforts to mobilize support for the regulations that could adversely affect its business can be rejected. Moreover, there are two key players in Indonesia’s WHO FCTC accession efforts: the Ministry of Health from the government side as the initiator institutions and Muhammadiyah Organization from the non-government side which have commitment to tobacco control by produce the Muhammadiyah Tobacco Control Framework (MTCF) in beginning of 2015. This key players selection based on the organization followers/members/mass, property owned, discipline, leadership, access and internal cohesion. The last was the strategy which consisted of three approaches, that were social from human resource competitiveness, economic from the national health insurance program and political from the post-2015 agenda. Conclusions: It could be concluded that the Indonesian government position in the decision-making process of the WHO FCTC ratification most affected by political viability both the party who pros and cons with this ratification. Then the key players can accelerate the process both Ministry of Health and Muhammadiyah organization. Last but not least, the strategies to accelerate the ratification of the WHO FCTC can be followed through research, and policy advocacy with issues of human resource competitiveness, national health insurance program, and post-2015 agenda.

Kata kunci: Pengembangan Implementasi E-Goverment, Indonesia, Kesiapan Lingkungan Abstract It is very surprising to see the fact that Indonesia is ranked as the 116th of EGDI (E-Gov- ernment Development Index) based on a survey conducted by United Nations (UN), moved down 10 ratings from 2014. This indicates that there are improper implementation and ac- tivities in the process of digital transformation in Government, especially on a national scale. Therefore, this article was created with the aim of reviewing the influencing factors in the process through library research method, especially the factors of environmental readi- ness, so that it can be used as a guide by the Government. With the basic assumption that Indonesia as a developing country, it can be concluded that these components consist of system quality, politics, social, economics, technology and demography. In each component contains several variables and parameters used as a benchmark to assess the efficiency and effectiveness of the environmental preparedness process in order to develop the implemen- tation of e-Government in Indonesian. Abstract: Indonesia is a country with the largest Muslim population in the world. However, since the Islamic banks were being established in Indonesia for about 20 years, their market share only accounts for about 5% in the Indonesian banking system. Muslim participations in using Islamic bank are relatively low. This study expands the Theory of Planned Behavior by adding the variables of religiosity and self-efficacy. Previous studies have not examined this new expanded model to analyze customers who participated in using the saving Islamic bank’s products and services. Based on 220 Islamic bank consumers who participated in the study, the study indicated that questionnaires about religiosity and self-efficacy had good external validity and could be adapted for the Indonesian culture context. The most interesting finding was that the religiosity variable strongly enhanced the use of Islamic banks. Similarly, this study found that the self-efficacy variable improved an intention of customers to participate in the Islamic banking system. This paper also discusses the implications of the findings and recommendations for future studies.

Abstract: This paper aims to disseminate information on Open Government Partnership (OGP) in Indonesia, in particular to examine the extent to which civil society organizations (CSOs) are involved. This paper uses qualitative methods with data collection through literature review sourced from online document. The data analysis process through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion is done simultaneously with data collection process. This paper reveals five issues: the reason of Indonesia joining the Open Government Partnership, the involvement and welfare of Indonesia CSOs in the Implementation of OGP Program, the cooperation between Indonesia CSOs and Government in the OGP Matters, and greatest achievements of the OGP in Indonesia. The conclusion of OGP's progress in Indonesia is that the Indonesian government together with CSOs have synergized to jointly realize Indonesia's commitment to realize good governance. Nevertheless, the scope of synergized areas is still limited, therefore broader cooperation and more coordinated networks are needed to reach all areas of public services to bring about openness, accountability and public participation.

Abstract: Social capital discourse has come to be the foremost and essential aspects in achieving sustainable development, participatory democracy and just cities. Indonesia is like most Asian countries where people spatially and socially co-live in a community that is related to a network of small clusters. However, the formal study related to social capital is hardly founded. Based on its characters, Gotong Royong which is a socio-cultural ethic of the togetherness philosophy in Indonesia can be perceived as an Indonesian social capital practice. Advancing social capital through participatory approaches will need a deep consideration about the role of professional and community engagement. Successful collaborations between wider actors in participatory approaches could lead to a fundamental transformation that can both preserve and nurture social capital values. High level of social capital within communities can potentially underpin the successful community participation towards communal goals.

Abstract: This paper examines the macro-economic performance of Vietnam through the six phases of Doi Moi reform and analyzes the impact of external liberalization on economic growth, aggregate demand, employment and income distribution. The decomposition of aggregate demand suggests that private investment was the most important determinant of Vietnamese economic growth during the period of 1994 – 2011, while government expenditure has become more significant since 2005, and the external sector together with government expenditure are the important driving factors of Vietnamese economic growth since 2012. The decomposition of overall labor productivity highlighted the fact that sectoral productivity growth of the service sector plays an important role in the improvement of overall labor productivity in Vietnam.

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to elaborate the usage of decomposed theory of planned behavior, in terms of users’ perspective of utilizing financial technology (FinTech) application in startup firms. Hereby, there are 375 respondents participated in the online survey. The survey was conducted through several social media platforms namely; WhatApps, Messenger, Linkedln, e-mail and Line group. The targeted respondents are from Italy, Turkey, and Indonesia. In this study, the constructs are generated from the decomposed theory of planned behavior as developed by Shih & Fang, (2004). Every indicator used in this research must be following several instrumental tests such as validity and reliability test. In order to get more knowledge and description about the different perceptions of users in three cross-country tests, the correlation analysis and descriptive statistics analysis with countries’ mean score are employed. According to the results, it is noted that Italian mean score (3.61) in regard to behavior intention (BI) of using financial technology application as the product of FinTech startup firms is relatively higher than the mean scores of Turkish (3.27) and Indonesian users (3.27).

Abstract: Vietnam has an excellent wind resource, and the cost of producing electricity from wind has decreased continuously over the last decade. After the feed in tariff for onshore wind power was raised to 8.5 UScents / kWh in 2018, the sector is finally taking off. The inventory of existing onshore wind power projects in Vietnam shows that the sector is on track to meet the government targets for 2020 and 2025. We explored three scenarios for wind power development in Vietnam up to 2030 and conclude that the wind power installed capacity by that year could be 12-15 GW onshore, 10-12 GW offshore. The policy implications are that first, the next power development plan of Vietnam provides an important opportunity to increase at low costs the level of ambition of wind power development. Second, flexibility should be the guiding principle of that plan. Third, to realize the large potential of offshore wind power, infrastructure planning has to start soon.

Abstract: This research aims to find a model of disaster information dissemination based on volunteer communities in Bandung Regency, West Java, Indonesia. In this research, data obtained from Focus Group Discussion (FGD) conducted by informants, in-depth interview with the experts related to this research, observation and literature review are analyzed. The sampling was done by purposive sample with criteria such as a person who (1) has been a volunteer disaster at least 1 year; (2) joins a volunteer community; (3) obtains a volunteer training (4) is active as disaster volunteer in the past year, conducting from five of volunteer communities, namely: TAGANA, UCS, PSM, SIBAT and DASI PENA. The total number of the informants is 13 people. Triangulation method is used by interviewing two of disaster practitioners who deal directly with disaster volunteer communities. The research results show (1) The person in charge for disaster information dissemination in Bandung Regency is Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) through the Operations Control Center Manager (PUSDALOPS) and the process of information dissemination begins with the early warning which is delivered to the village and sub-district or to the disaster volunteer communities via radio, SMS Gateway, words of mouth, website, blog, Twitter and Facebook; (2) There are many volunteer communities in Bandung Regency, some of which is founded by government agencies, private sectors, political parties, professional communities, the public, etc.; (3) The supervising institutions of volunteer communities provides the training to the members to have knowledges and skills to be able to deal with the disasters, protect themselves and help the others; (4) The character of the people who have experience in disaster frequently in the environment tends to think that disasters is a normal occurrence and feel like already knows everything so they are passive in seeking of disaster information. The characteristics of community are also influenced by religion and belief, environmental, economic, social and cultural factors as well as technological factors. (5) The role of the volunteer communities in the dissemination of disaster information is divided into three phases: pre-disaster, emergency response and post-disaster. The activities can be in the form of socialization, simulations and coaching for disasters, correcting the disaster disinformation, etc. (6) The volunteer communities coordinate with local community leaders/opinion leaders to make effective communication process with the public. (7) The direction of command/ coordination of disaster information dissemination based on volunteer communities started from the command of BPBD, then coordinated with the supervising institutions of volunteer communities, collaboration with opinion leaders and then prepare a good communication strategy in order to disseminate disaster information can be received by the public well. With good knowledge of the disaster, it is expected that the society becomes aware to the disaster, keeps the environment, protects themselves and helps families and the others, participating in disaster management and disaster risk reduction on pre-disaster, emergency response, and post-disaster (8) The model of disaster information dissemination is started from the policy of disaster management by appointing the person in charge for disaster information dissemination and coordinating with related parties, and then it is continued by determining the dissemination target, identifying the needs of disaster information, selecting and identifying the available information source and producing new information that has not been available yet but the people need it, composing module or disaster information package, arranging the message delivery strategy, choosing volunteer community as an information channel, coordinating with all of the parties in the field, executing the disaster information dissemination, collecting feedback, evaluating, compiling the report and recommendation from related parties as the material to make the policy of information dissemination better for the future.

Abstract: This paper evaluates the impacts of the 2007-2008 food price crisis, especially price increases of rice, on household welfare and poverty in Laos that is atypical in that glutinous rice is the main staple. With a nationally representative household survey, net sellers and buyers of ordinary and glutinous rice are identified, and consumer and producer price data are analyzed. The study found that the impact of the food price crisis in 2007-2008 was negligible. This is mainly because the role of ordinary rice in sales and purchases in Laos is not as significant as in other Southeast Asian countries. However, with hypothetical higher growth rates for increases of glutinous rice, the change in household welfare for the average Lao household is neutral, but it is positive in rural areas and negative in urban areas.

Abstract: The mentioning of Hanoi – the capital city of Vietnam and the land of thousand years of civilization – depicts among both locals and tourists the image of the ‘Sword Lake’ with its ancient ‘Turtle Tower’ and the charming Old Quarter with its preserved shop-houses lying along small ancient commercial alleys. The houses in the old quarter constructed over a century ago which feature tube houses with inclined tile roofs and a blend of French architecture create the infusions of history and memory. One can easily find abundant research done on these townhouses, either in the collectibles of many authors, the quintessential drawings of talented painters, or in publications on the history of the Old Quarter. Among these, the recent work by Vuong et al. (2019) adds an extremely interesting view of the architectural features of Hanoi’s ancient townhouses as these features are viewed as dependent and independent variables. The study titled ‘Cultural evolution in Vietnam’s early 20th century: A Bayesian network analysis of Hanoi Franco- Chinese house designs’ aims to find traces of cultural evolution in the early 20th century in Vietnam and highlight the most notable elements that affect the Vietnamese people’s perception of cultural evolutions.

Abstract: This study examines the demand for fish in Indonesia by estimating how prices, expenditure, and household demographics affect demand based on data from five regions of the country. Data is obtained from the National Socio-Economic Survey of 2014 and analysed using the Quadratic Almost Ideal Demand System (QUAIDS) model. The results show that expenditure on fish is elastic at the national and regional levels and it is considered a luxury good. At the national level, the estimated price elasticities show that fish is inelastic in rural and urban areas. Uncompensated cross-price elasticities in rural and urban areas illustrate that fish is a complement to meat and eggs and milk, and vice versa. Compensated cross-price elasticities show that fish is a complement to meat and substitute for eggs and milk. Uncompensated own-price elasticities of fish in five regions are relatively inelastic. Compensated own-price elasticities in most regions are negative, except in Sulawesi and Eastern Indonesia and the uncompensated cross-price elasticities of fish in all regions show that eggs and milk are substitutes for fish.

Abstract: The advancement of technology and Smartphone applications offers a lot of opportunities and challenges for companies to increase their market share. Through this technology and its application, companies such as transportation industries can make a lot of money and bring their products and services closer, faster and more easily to customers. In addition the customers can gain access to companies’ services and products on time. On the other hand the advancement of Smartphone technology disrupts the common transportation business practices. Communication and negotiation are becoming more virtual. This technology brings about huge benefits to both customers and companies. However the same technology causes a huge problem especially to other transportation companies as they might lose market if they do not use it. This technology helps many transportation industries to make business innovations such as offering lower prices, faster services and deliveries. This research focuses on transportation companies, specifically motorcycle taxis with online booking, which use a Smartphone application. In Manado Indonesia there are three popular motorcycle taxi online companies that use a Smartphone online application, which are Gojek, Grab and Uber. A lot of people use an online motorcycle taxi rather than public transportation because of its convenience, affordable price, safety and speed compared to local public transport. This study aims to find out the determinant factors that influence people to use motorcycle taxi online services. This research is going to reveal the favorite motorcycle taxi online company and its criteria based on respondents’ perspectives. This paper will use the Analytical Hierarchy Process both for data gathering and data analysis. The research findings will contribute to the local government in formulating laws and policies specifically on motorcycle taxi online service.

Abstract: Keterangan: Artikel ini merupakan versi postprint. Abstract: In response to complaints by Ukraine, Honduras, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, and Indonesia, the Government of Australia has defended the introduction of plain packaging of tobacco products in the World Trade Organization. This article focuses upon the legal defence of Australia before the WTO Panel. A key part of its defence has been the strong empirical evidence for the efficacy of plain packaging of tobacco products as a legitimate health measure designed to combat the global tobacco epidemic. Australia has provided a convincing case that plain packaging of tobacco products is compatible with the TRIPS Agreement 1994 – particularly the clauses relating to the aims and objectives of the agreement; the requirements in respect of trade mark law; and the parallel measures in relation to access to essential medicines. Australia has also defended the consistency of plain packaging of tobacco products with the TBT Agreement 1994. Moreover, Australia has provided clear reasons for why the plain packaging of tobacco products is compatible with GATT. The position of Australia has been reinforced by a number of third parties – such as New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Norway, Canada, and others - which have also been pioneers in tobacco control and public health. Australia’s leadership in respect of tobacco control and plain packaging of tobacco products is further supported by larger considerations in respect of international public health law, human rights, and sustainable development.

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to examine the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis in Indonesia between economic growth and environmental quality by employing panel data for 33 provinces for the period of 2011-2017. We use the Environmental Quality index (EQI) as an integrated environmental indicator, which is composed of Water Quality Index (WQI), Air Quality Index (AQI) and Forest Cover Index (FCI). Moreover, spatial regression models are applied to investigate the dependence of environmental conditions in negihboring areas. The findings are: (1) while the existence of Environmental Kuznets Curve is found for EQI, AQI and FCI, the AQI continues to decrease with the increase in GDP per capita within the ranre of the current levels; (2) the presence of spatial interactions among variables is identified for WQI, AQI and FCI; (3) population density contributes positively to WQI and negatively to AQI. The findings suggest that the government should positively take policy instruments to mitigate a decline in environmetal quality with economic growth. In addition, the government should not rely on the evidence that supports the EKC relationship for a specific single indicator when making a decision on environmental policy. Moreover, spatial effects should be taken into consideration in environmental policy-making process and involving citizens in environmental programs is also suggested.

Abstract: Value co-creation (VCC) has served as a facilitator for business innovation by considering the benefits of the relationships between the involved actors. The previous research on VCC has signified an essential impact for both customers and organisations through the negotiated exchange process, which is associated with the service-dominant logic. However, there is limited empirical research that has conceptualised the VCC process. Therefore, this study aims to address this gap by exploring the co-creation process within a value chain. The focus of the study is vegetable marketing in Indonesia. Horticulture business in Indonesia represents a significant contribution to the national economy. The transformation of agri-food supply chains from a traditional product-focussed towards a modern, service-based approach makes them a suitable empirical focus to explore value co-creation. In-depth interviews with multiple agribusiness actors (n=20) within vegetable supply chains of various complexity were undertaken in the West Java Province. An inductive, interpretive analysis shows that VCC can be defined as a result of an iterative process with proactive, inclusive, and collaborative action by involving all actors in the business ecosystem to actively engaged in exploring, exchanging resources and tracking new ideas to satisfy customer needs. The objective of co-creation in a B2B context is to develop an extensive business network, to enhance knowledge and achieve competitive advantage. Multiple stakeholders formed a networkof small businesses to propose a solutionby aligning and synchronisingthe market participants, not only supplier or retailer with the consumer, but also producers such as farmer or farmer groups. The resultshighlight the importance of actors’ willingness to engage in collaboration, mutual understanding, mutual benefits, and thedevelopment of the agriculture community. Four factors are the potential contributors to the VCC process facilitated by inclusive business initiatives. Adopting co-creation initiatives requires the involved parties to realise that the activities offer mutual benefits to all collaborators. The mutual understanding among the involved actors can represent a new idea and develop close relationships on addressing market challenges while the development of the agricultural community to an inclusive agribusiness model is part of the initiative to strengthen businesses. Also, the realisation of co-creation outcomeshassignificant impacts on generating new demand, enhancingthe consumer experience, changing consumer behaviour and improving competitive advantages.A holistic conceptual modelintegrates value co-creation and inclusive business toassess the co-creation potential. The paper also discusses the potential theoretical and practical implications.

Abstract: The Greek thinker Aristotle ever tried to explain cities phenomenon by mentioning that a good life can be founded in the togetherness of city living. Nevertheless, today’s fact there is no city has ever meant the good life for all its inhabitants. It becomes harder and harder to define a good life inside the city, as well as looking what makes a good city in current perspective. Cities are now seen at best as a great social problem and at worst as utopian city solution that yet never come. That makes sense that the concept of making good city is debatable, and somehow it is very subjective. Starting with an explanation of the period when a good city notion emerged, this essay will try to analyze in a very brief manner the discourses between physical and non-physical strategies to develop a good city notion. Afterwards, it will be extended to the role of opportunity to build a future good city. The opportunity will be in line with the concept of the right to the city, which originally based on Henri Lefebvre’s Theory (Lefebvre, 1996). Staying back to the musing between what is good and what is bad, this essay is trying to investigate what is reasoning behind good or bad and how to solve it. Then, it will be navigated to how people can deal with the bad condition of the city and solving their problem as a part of their right. The notions of a good city, however, belong to the residents. What city needs the most was a most intricate and close-grained diversity of uses that give each other constant mutual supports (Jacobs, 1961). The cases of Kampung Code in Yogyakarta, which was the winner of Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 1992 will be highlighted to be an example of how people are dealing with their bad condition, struggling on their right and taking the opportunity given.

Abstract: Three pillars of development 1) Government, 2) Private Sector, and 3) Society. They had the role and function in answering public’s questions and became a motor of development in providing solutions especially in asset management of Limboto Lake. Lake Rescue had made either through academic research, community empowerment, and FGD by various agencies until the signing the MoU between local government and city in 2006. However, it was considered too late to follow-up. The Implementation of Regulation No. 1 of 2008 on the Limboto Lake management had not accompanied by concrete efforts, effectively and continuously by the government, society, or even private sector. The political administration aspects of Japesda Gorontalo showed that the management of Lake Rescue was not done in isolation. The public’s role was needed in ranging program planning; regulation, control, and preservation as an essential part in managing Limboto Lake. This study aimed to identify and describe the role of three actors in the management of public assets Limboto Lake. Tis study use case study approach. The research location was in Limboto Lake of Gorontalo. The technique of collecting data was observation, interview, and documentation. The Data analysis began with reduction of data; presenting data and conclusion. The results showed that the sector's role in public assets management of Limboto Lake had not been based on New Public Management (NPM) which increased the social development, science, and technology. The Lack of information hindered the sector’s role and government's relationship with public and private sectors to improve the policy that public needed.

Abstract: This article aimed at introduce and offer a thought to the direction establishment of the theory of Urban Spatial Articulation developed and based on the theory of Articulation of Mode of Production—a theory in the realm of macro sociology that offers an assumption that social formations in "periphery" are controlled, at least, by the articulation of two modes of production, i.e capitalist mode of production and pre-capitalist mode of production in which one dominates the other. To understand this theory well, at the beginning of the discussion it is described some significant concepts, then a description of the result of two studies on urban spatial articulation in two urban commercial areas, each of which has the different physical character. The first was a study of urban spatial articulation that occur at a shopping street. While the second, is a study of urban spatial articulation formed in a wholesale market area, where both are located in Makassar City. Abstract: This research employs the Bayesian network modeling approach, and the Markov chain Monte Carlo technique, to learn about the role of lies and violence in teachings of major religions, using a unique dataset extracted from long-standing Vietnamese folktales. The results indicate that, although lying and violent acts augur negative consequences for those who commit them, their associations with core religious values diverge in the final outcome for the folktale characters. Lying that serves a religious mission of either Confucianism or Taoism (but not Buddhism) brings a positive outcome to a character (βT_and_Lie_O= 2.23; βC_and_Lie_O= 1.47; βT_and_Lie_O= 2.23). A violent act committed to serving Buddhist missions results in a happy ending for the committer (βB_and_Viol_O= 2.55). What is highlighted here is a glaring double standard in the interpretation and practice of the three teachings: the very virtuous outcomes being preached, whether that be compassion and meditation in Buddhism, societal order in Confucianism, or natural harmony in Taoism, appear to accommodate two universal vices—violence in Buddhism and lying in the latter two. These findings contribute to a host of studies aimed at making sense of contradictory human behaviors, adding the role of religious teachings in addition to cognition in belief maintenance and motivated reasoning in discounting counterargument.

Abstract: This paper discusses the short-maturity behavior of Asian option prices and hedging portfolios. We consider the risk-neutral valuation and the delta value of the Asian option having a H\"older continuous payoff function in a local volatility model. The main idea of this analysis is that the local volatility model can be approximated by a Gaussian process at short maturity $T.$ By combining this approximation argument with Malliavin calculus, we conclude that the short-maturity behaviors of Asian option prices and the delta values are approximately expressed as those of their European counterparts with volatility $$\sigma_{A}(T):=\sqrt{\frac{1}{T^3}\int_0^T\sigma^2(t,S_0)(T-t)^2\,dt}\,,$$ where $\sigma(\cdot,\cdot)$ is the local volatility function and $S_0$ is the initial value of the stock. In addition, we show that the convergence rate of the approximation is determined by the H\"older exponent of the payoff function. Finally, the short-maturity asymptotics of Asian call and put options are discussed from the viewpoint of the large deviation principle.

Abstract: History is written in textbooks but is indubitably remembered through cultural artifacts and architecture. This is particularly the case when one thinks of Hanoi, the capital city of Vietnam, where its thousands of years of ancient history can be found in the old citadels, and more than half a century of French colonialism can be glimpsed in the Old Quarter houses. Many of these structures have survived the brutality of wars and now feed into the nostalgia of French aesthetic. Yet, in what way can we come to gain greater insight into a cultural space where there is an interconnection between religion, house designs, and forms of feeling? One can find an answer to this question in a newly-published scientific research article titled “Cultural evolution in Vietnam's early 20th century: A Bayesian networks analysis of Hanoi Franco-Chinese house designs” in the Social Sciences and Humanities Open journal of Elsevier.

Abstract: Trade liberalization entails the transition from trade taxes to domestic taxes. Certain structural characteristics such as narrow tax base and significant proportion of subsistence sectors, however, constrain such transition and hence reducing public revenues in developing countries. This paper contributes to this debate by assessing the impact of trade liberalisation on domestic tax revenue in Laos. We find that Laos has been able to recover revenue loss from tariff reduction through the introduction of value-added tax (VAT). VAT generated LAK 5,510 billion or 30% of tax revenue in 2017, which was about twice higher than the ratio of tariff revenue to tax revenue in 2000. Our simulation results of tariff liberalization using a computable general equilibrium (CGE) model also reveals that further reduction in tariff rate will be associated with lower indirect tax rate. In particular, the 20% tariff reduction will increase private consumption by 1.14%, but will decrease the effective indirect tax rate from 6.2% to 5.2% and reduce tax revenue by 11%. The worsening tax revenue loss reflects the non-optimal indirect tax rate, which needs to be reduced by 11%. The key policy implication is that any policy designed for raising tax revenue should aim at improving tax collection system and broadening tax base rather raising indirect tax rate.

Abstract: This paper documents an increasing intergenerational income persistence in China since economic reforms were introduced in 1979. The intergenerational income elasticity increases from 0.390 for the 1970–1980 birth cohort to 0.442 for the 1981–1988 birth cohort; this increase is more evident among urban and coastal residents than rural and inland residents. We also explore how changes in intergenerational income persistence is correlated with market reforms, economic development, and policy changes.

Abstract: We compare prominent global energy scenarios of organisations and companies. We supplement the analysis with four own scenarios, which were derived from structured analytic techniques in combination with a numerical global energy and resource market model (Multimod). Our study provides three central contributions: (i) a compact survey of selected outlooks with meta characteristics (conceptual nature, numerical framework, qualitative elaboration) and quantitative energy system indicators at the global and regional (Europe, Asia-Pacific region, North America) level; (ii) numerous observations from a verbal analysis intended to stimulate future research; and (iii) the discussion of our own outlook. Among other conclusions, we find that scenarios essentially carrying forward current policies and/or trends lead to future worlds that do not meet the 2°C target of the Paris Agreement. Interestingly, there are both normative and exploratory scenarios reaching the Paris Agreement, and there is no consensus between outlooks on how to attain low-emission futures towards 2050. Some scenarios rely on a very strong role of renewables, others on a substantial role of negative emission technologies with fossil fuel use, yet others on assuming decreasing energy demand. There is a strong variation between outlooks with respect to transparency on scenario generation, modelling approach, and data. We argue that, in addition to transparency, the actual inclusion of a qualitative analysis of drivers and storylines helps ensure the political, social and technological feasibility of scenarios.

Abstract: And not just look; one needs to know where to look as well. In this case: look upwards, on the second floor of the old townhouses, which has not been replaced by showcasing pavilions or modern glass doors. Some houses have been repainted, but the architecture – the form of the story, the shapes, and construction of the balconies, the decorating sculptures – still exudes a century-old familiarity. So it turns out that Phố Phái, though no longer intact, is still present here.
