Abstract: This article is part of a Living Literature Review exploring topics related to intellectual property, focusing on insights from the economic literature. Our aim is to provide a clear and non-technical introduction to patent rights, making them accessible to graduate students, legal scholars and practitioners, policymakers, and anyone curious about the subject.

Abstract: Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard valued at $68.7 billion has drastically altered the landscape of the video game industry. At the time of the takeover, the intellectual properties of Activision Blizzard included World of Warcraft, Diablo, Hearthstone, StarCraft, Overwatch, Battle.net, Candy Crush Saga, and Call of Duty. This article aims to explore the patenting activity of Activision Blizzard between 2008 (the original merger) and 2023 (the Microsoft acquisition). Four IPC code co-occurrence networks (co-classification maps) are constructed and analyzed based on the patent data downloaded from the WIPO Patentscope database. International Patent Classification (IPC) codes are a language agnostic system for the classification of patents. When multiple IPC codes co-occur in a patent, it shows that the technologies are connected. These relationships can be used for patent mapping. The analysis identifies the prolific and bridging technologies of Activision Blizzard and explores its synergistic role as a subsidiary of Microsoft Corporation.

Abstract: This article explores the role of patents and the possible existence of a link between them and job creation, which fills an important gap in the literature. Job creation being measured by the movement of staff among patented companies in a region of France. Usually, management sciences not really deal with the question of job creation from a quantitative point of view, but will rather evoke the consequences of axiology on organizations (Heinich, 2017), through the value of work (Guieu & Chanut Guieu, 2011; Burger-Helmchen, 2008). Our correlation is the result of a longitudinal study by cohorts over twenty years, which takes into account 100% of siren having had a patent issued in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur territory. The results establish this link for companies with less than 10 employees. The discussion exposed at the end of the article expresses an opinion about the application of this discovery to cause a theorical inflection of the unemployment curve in France, which gives a new societal meaning to innovation.
